Man jailed in Pittsburgh after trying to pass off a $1 million bill at a grocery store

PITTSBURGH - Change for a million?

That's what a man was seeking Saturday when he handed a $1 million bill to a cashier at a Pittsburgh supermarket. But when the Giant Eagle employee refused and a manager confiscated the bogus bill, the man flew into a rage, police said.

The man slammed an electronic funds-transfer machine into the counter and reached for a scanner gun, police said.

Police arrested the man, who was not carrying identification and has refused to give his name to authorities. He is being held in the Allegheny County Jail.

Since 1969, the $100 bill is the largest note in circulation.

Police believe the $1 million note seized at the supermarket may have originated at a Dallas-based ministry. Last year, the ministry distributed thousands of religious pamphlets with a picture of President Grover Cleveland on a $1 million bill.

Might of worked if he had told them to keep the change...

How was he expecting to get his change for a bag of groceries? In Presidential dollars???
    How hilarious!

Should the tract on the bill read:

Probably would have worked at the gas station. His total bill at a grocery store wouldn't be enough for the clerk to make change. At the pump, though????
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

Here's a really bad picture of one I just took (guess I shouldn't be expecting 500k in change when I buy that Mercedes SLR image ) :

That was a $200 bill with George Bush on it.

  • Well I guess my few million aren't going to help me! image Mine have a portrait of Liberty on them and don't look real at all.

I forget the name of the guy but there was a TV show with a guy who would con people into giving them their wallets. They didn't even realize they were doing it! One guy figured it out came back to retrieve it and ended up giving the guy his watch! This fellow bought stuff from stores in NYC with blank pieces of paper (sized like bills) and even got change! It was amazing! I just wish I could remember the name of the show...

An excellent point, BUT...... as TradeDollarNut said "Anyone stupid enough to try and pass it off is probably stupid enough to think it was real"..... The fellow might have thought that his "MILLION DOLLARS" was being stolen from him.......

Yeah, OK, I was looking for funny, and he doesn't do funny. Anyway, thanks for quoting the link, it's hilarious. Don't miss the new top post on the takedown Rudy did on a Ron Paul-Luddite whacko.

  • He was probably just trying to be funny and got pi$$ed off when they tried to confiscate it from him. I doubt he went to jail for the bill as much as his reaction to them taking it from him.

I have all kinds of coins, tokens and a few medals. I'm not a big time Stack's Auction collector. I don't collect for investment or value. When I see a coin I think is neat, I grab it. I collect a few coins by year and mint, like Lincoln and Canadian Cents, Westward Journey Nickels, State Quarters, Presidential Dollars and 2 or 3 others. I have some Proof Sets and Uncirculated Sets. I've been collecting for 34 years, so I have a little bit of everything.
