<< <i>You know, there's a comment in the update to the story that I had been thinking about. Because the Fed hasn't actually issued the latter dollars, they might not actually be legal tender. That's about all that he could be accused of. Then again, I'm not sure what they are talking about with the missing identifiers and that the edge lettering is too close together. >>

    Yeah!
    Dat's right!
    Dey ain't been monetized yet!
It worked for the 1933 $20!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yeah, but:

"Officers said markings missing on the coins made them appear counterfeit, such as three connected hash marks. The lettering on the sides of the coin is also too close together."

implies that the "markings" are missing, not extra as on the Proof coins.

I'm surprised that they didn't note the S mint marks, and conclude that they represent a form of Satan worship!!!!!!!

Macomb County Illinois, out West of Peeoria. It's not quite the end of the World, but you can see it from there.

Take some $5 red and blue seal notes.

Back in the early 80s, I acquired some low grade fractional notes and had fun spending them. Won a bar bet with a bartender that I could pay exact change for a $2.75 beer without giving him any coins, and then tipped the waitress the 25 cent note. Somebody had already told her and the bartender that the notes were from the Civil War era, and she was thrilled.

Up near Rocky Mountain National Park, I went into a tiny mountain town post office to buy five 13 cent postcard stamps. Gave the young lady behind the counter two quarters and a 15 cent note. She absolutely freaked, and said that I would have to wait for the Postmistress to get back from lunch to approve it, as she was the only one there. She was afraid she might get stuck for the 15 cents.

    capt,

i thought people used civil war era notes as wall paper and they held little value
    in the end.

were the notes you were spending northern federal notes?
and did the ones that lose 100% of their value were of course the southern confederacy notes?

thanks. i think your story is uber cool. never heard of a note less then a dollar.

Are you kidding us?image Only Confederate notes became worthless.

Actually if you think about it those Confederate notes are worth quite a bit these days!
  • Perhaps Atticus Finch could set them straight (you know what i mean if you've read To Kill a Mockingbird)

i am not a note collector.
i could have worded that better but sometimes money is phased out.
one has to exchange it for the "newer" currency.

didn't the euro do just that to many old notes?

anyway, interesting story and i wish i had a bundle of fractional
    notes to spend.

Macomb, IL - home of WIU (Western Illinois University) - reminds me of Charleston, IL - the home of EIU (Eastern Illinois University). Speaking of Charleston and college town stupidity at work, I saw this sign yesterday adverstising a movie out on video.

    image

I did not hesitate to take the pic as I know that it would be taken down later in the day. The very name of the video store is what make it very funny! image

Goes to prove - college towns have idiots, too!

Reminds me of the Mike Bolesta case with Best Buy. Of course, there we weren't dealing with sh*tkicking hicks but had a similar outcome. People are stupid all over the place.

EIU in Charleston, IL is in a pickle - a student there with a history of Post Tramatic Stress Disorder got suspended for two semesters because she had a flashback and compared her condition with what happened at Virginia Tech. What these stupid college employees did was that they discriminated against her because of her condition and violated her civil rights. I see a lawsuit coming! image

And speaking of stupidity (from the same college), about a month ago 86 kids got busted by the cops at the local pizza joint for underage drinking. According to the local newspaper, a new record. And I would not be the least bit surprised that this record will be broken.......I'm betting at least 100! image

a student there with a history of Post Tramatic Stress Disorder

    ---

or maybe we should realize not all people are the same and politically
correctness must die. i would not want to goto school with a fruit
cake sitting next to me ready to unleash her problems on the class.
people pay serious money for college and too lump everyone in the
same bowl is silly. if a person causes a ruckus kick them out for
whatever reason. college is not babysitting.

ooooo i said my opinion like a man.

In the case of the student, she was sexually abused pretty bad as a child. As far as post tramatic stress disorder, anyone can get it, especially those who have been in very extreme situations like warfare (which such condition was formerly known as "shellshock" and "battle fatigue"), natural/manmade disaters, and traumatic events in one's life.

Here is article in the EIU newspaper - Article
