1986 Topps Baseball Rack Case Rip!~ from BBCE... arrived today! Dial-Uppers be warned!

The UPS man left it on my back steps, didnt ring the doorbell, didnt leave a note on the front door... I literally tripped over it when i went to toss out the garbage. LOL

anyhoo!

I was inspired by the Nolan Ryan thread (PSA 10) and the ridiculously silly price it's going to close at $3,000 at last check. Cost of the case $50 + $9 shipping, well worth the fun!

drumroll please! It was my day off, so I had time to photograph the process.....

grabbed a kitchen knife...and started slicing. All right! Shipping Peanuts!

...anticipation:

Jackpot!

ah....flashing back to 1986....

image

Almost too pretty to tear open....nah! shred em!

image

oh crap! hope this isnt a harbinger of things to come!
image

opening packs is hard!
image

Next post will have some scans....I have ripped one full box of racks, 24 to be exact with 48 cards in each pack. I got two Ryans....

    My Giants collection want list

WTB: 2001 Leaf Rookies & Stars Longevity: Ryan Jensen #/25
  • pulled one fielder out of the first box of racks, its got surface issues when you view the card at angle. Ill keep an eye out as I continue to rip!

Nice rip. Looks like some 9's and 10's are in there. The Ryan looks pretty sharp. If the back is centered 80/20 then I would say your card has a definite shot at a PSA 10.

I'm guessing the rack case is what about $60? So you could buy 50 rack cases for the price that Ryan 10 sold for.

I wonder how many potential 10's you might get out of that many pack fresh cards?

I predict a future psa 10 on the top Ryan! Its a beauuuuuuuty!!!

Very nice, decent centering on a year known to have OC problems. Isnt it just fun to rip?

    BobaFett72,

Man that looked like a pretty sweet rack case.... Great Job and some nice pulls...image

I agree the Ryans look pretty darn nice....... Good luck, let us know what PSA thinks of them.
  • I had a great time! and I still have two more boxes to rip! Not sure when I'll get the time, perhaps over the weekend.

Curious what I should do with the packs with the stars on top...

Sell them to GARY, I understand he just bought a "State of the Art" rack resealer... image

I did the same, a few weeks ago, when I saw the Ryan 10 thread, and bought a rack case also. I think it was $60 or $66, with postage, from BBC. I sent 11 of them to PSA yesterday including two Ryan's. Will post results when I get them.
  • That first Ryan has no shot at a 9 or 10. Look at the right border in the black.

Now the one in the rack pack looks like the best of the batch but hard to tell and the centering is off.
  • the one in the rack is off center, thats for sure. Perfection is hard to achieve.

It is the kind of set that could grow on you. I love the Gibson card, not a clear photograph, but cool to see old Tiger Stadium in the background.

I have to disagree. I dont see that cut holding the Ryan from achieving a 10. It could also be the scanner lighting/reflection.

How does that first Ryan look in person?
  • ill post larger scans of the ryan later tonight (and digicam photos)
  • Could be the scanner, but I have seen better looking ones with no white visible at all in the black only come back an 8

I'm thinking about buying a case myself, just to chance it.

Wonder how many PSA 10 Clemens there are ('86 Topps of course)?

    Thanx for sharing Boba

I really like those black borders!

But, it also shows how hard it is to pull a 10. Good luck on your sub.

My 3 box rack case showed up yesterday, and I have one question. How on God's green earth did you remain sane after having to flip every other card just to put them all right side up? What kind of quality control allows every other card in the rack to be upside down?
  • It drove me nuts as well... I stopped flipping them over about half way through the 1st box.... All the commons went right to a moster box - I'm sure there are some nice 10 commons!

I got 6 Ryans all had poor centering.

    leath,

    Thanks,

  • I've openned 5 rack boxes in the past week and pulled the following:

    10 - Nolan Ryan
    7 - Roger Clemens
    6 - Cal Ripken
    6 - Wade Boggs
    6 - Don Mattingly
    7 - Kirby Puckett
    11 - Tony Gwynn
    7 - Ryne Sandberg
    6 - Cecil Fielder

Still have 1 box left to rip... I think I'll save it for a while!
    image
  • Each one I think has something wrong that would prevent it from a 10.

Actually, from the pic and from our vantage point, it seems that all are off on centering to the left just a bit. Some have off towards the top as well.

That's one of the main problems with that card and why folks are willing to pay so much for it, I guess.

i opened 2 racks packs last night from a fresh 3-rack case and pulled a ryan. it would be an 8 on a good day...bad corner.

i'm still laughing at nam's comment on every other card being flipped....it is annoying.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

  • Arny is right they are all little OC - The Clemens, Boggs, Mattingly are much worse than the Ryans.

I'll scan a pic of the best one - what does the card have to be at (centering wise) to get a 10.
