1921-P Mercury Dime - Massively clashed dies, ever seen this before??

I have seen hundreds of 21-P dimes and I have never noticed anything like this before. Massively clashed dies on the obverse. You can see the reverse stem boldly punched out of Liberty's neck. The stem is in high relief, the same relief as the other devices on the obverse. The other two pictures show the reverse leaves coming out of Liberty's neck and face. These are not in as high relief.

Have you ever seen anything like this before? I've never seen anything like it on a 21-P.

  • never saw one, BUT

Quoting Langes 2nd edition, the opening statement says "A prominent die clash is most visible on the obverse in front of Liberty's face. This variety is accompanied by extreme die erosion on both obverse and reverse. While merely a die state phenomena that carry no premium value, they are nonetheless worth noting."

the pics don't look like yours though. Yours seems like it's rotated.

That is very cool looking, especially the stem beneath Ms. Liberty's chin.

I've seen them. They are not common.

  • That is awesome! Can you post a normal photograph of the entire obverse too?
  • Is this a variety normally collected by Merc collectors?

I have the cherrypicking Merc Dimes book, and I don't think it mentions this coin.

I'll get some full pictures up tonight.

  • That is a cool coin! That particular type of clash marks is very common on many dates, but your's is a bit bolder
than most that I've seen. I don't think it's a very heavily collected variety because there are so many of them.
    Neat item nevertheless!!
