I had to go back and pick up the toned 1867-1967 Canadian set. It's a framed set w/a 1 dollar bill and the complete coin set from the 1$, half, quarter, dime , nickel and 1 cent coins.

The quarter is the best toner of the bunch and looks better on the side that was hidden inside the frame.

The surprise was that inside the frame was a Coin World paper from the 60's that has gold BU St. G's advertised for 30$...image

It's the one he and my Mom bought when he graduated from med school so it has a little more meaning to me than other gem Saints I have. image

Let me hijack this thread with a killer toner from the darkside -- do you think it's AT??

    image
  • RedStorm

I don't know darkside material enough to tell you if that's a natural toner or not but, it sure does look purrty!! image

Well, I confess, I was baiting a bit. It is indeed naturally toned. I bought this Austrian proof set about 15 - 20 years ago. I remember the silver coins were white and had a slight cameo. Just found them recently in the garage in a storage box -- guess I misplaced them and lost track. I assume they've been out in the garage most all of the last 15 years in 60% humidity with temps ranging from below freezing in winter to over 100 in summer. This hot, humid soup they stewed in for 15 years really gave this and, to a lesser extent, the other silver coin in the set some wild colors!

The 1967 Canadian silver pieces frequently come colorfully toned, as do the 1971-73 cased silver dollars. It's a cheap way to get your toning on... image

  • Wow, those are spectacular, the obverse of the 25c especially, as you said. I'll get better images of them from Phil when I submit them after you sell them to me.

Obverse of the 25c, first image with one 50w reveal bulb directly on the coin with a color reference beside it, and the second with the light's spot above the coin, not directly on it.

imageRight gear! Manuel, I hold my ancient Nikon 4200 in my right hand and the coin in my left. I splurged on this one, set the coin down under the gooseneck, on a book, and held the camera with 2 hands.

Can't decide how it got that toning. The 67 sets often have great toning plus high grades. The holder it came in didn't impart that though.

I think the picture frame and cardboard backing may have had a hand in the toning of this set, I've seen these nicely toned also , I have a 4 coin set of these in a different holder that are not as colorful.

The C.W. paper may have also helped , I think it was placed in there when the paper was still fresh.

Those are spectacular ---- and you almost passed on those? I would have scooped them up in a heartbeat.

image I'm usually hunting for Morgan VAMs in the local shops, it's when the pickings are slim that I look at other stuff they have.

This set really caught my eye because it was in a picture frame and the coins looked unusually attractive ........and I was scared LucyBop might hunt me down for passing on nice toners. image
