<< <i>Wheredo you find things from the UK or Germany? All I can find from there is beer and watered down whiskey. >>

Lets see....Braun electric razors, Bosch washer and dryers, and Flexi dog leashes - all three are made in Germany (or "Deutschland" for those who speak "Deutsche") >>

And I thaught that stuff was made in China also.

What isn't made in China? Harley Davidson gets there fastners, washers, nuts and bolts from China.

Walmart sells American flags made in China.

Whats next, the Slaughter House (aka U.S. Mint), and the BEP outsource the production of coins and currency to China?

Little China girl running a printing press, pumping out sheets of bills, for the BEP. Thats a scary thought.

Sure, we want to go home. We want this war over with. The quickest way to get it over with is to go get the bastards who started it. The quicker they are whipped, the quicker we can go home. - General George S. Patton

They've been selling copied CD's/DVD's for years.

One college professor once told me that copied "stolen" software was their biggest export.

<<<Doesn't make it right and it scares the crap out of me, but I do think the Chinese are very capable and very motivated>>>

Just what are you scared of? The Chinese are the oldest or one of the oldest surviving civilizations in the world. And yet somehow, America is light-years ahead of them. The only way they are becoming respectable as a economic power is by copying what others have already done - Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Germany, etc.

As far as counterfeits, big deal. It just shows how desperately poor some of them are.

You just answered your own question.

The fact that they are the oldest surviving civilization proves to us that they know exactly that - how to survive!!

Survive, yes. But the question wasn't about survival. In my opinion they are the largest failure the world has ever known. Bountiful resources, plenty of manpower, fair climate, and look what they've achieved.

I blame US politicians for allowing this situation. They got loans from China to fuel their uncontrolled spending, made ridiculus trade agreements that we're stuck with and now are afraid to limit imports from them. It's a detriment to this country.

Big corporations like Boeing and Intel are shifting important high tech manufacturing to China. I hate to say it but our politicians have left us out to get the shaft.

Remember when you vote and shop, that's the best way to limit the damage. Of course avoiding China products or finding US politicians worth a vote is getting as hard as collecting hens teeth

<< <i>It's no joke. It's very real. Don't buy China-anything. It's your health and safety that you are gambling with, and their stuff is crap anyway. >>

I had to buy Chinese when I picked up my crap iPod. I'm thinking about buying Chinese again to get a crap iPhone. I'm still wondering why I lower my standards so much to buy crap Chinese products.

Of course, part of what's really crappy about the iPod is the DRM but that's mandated by American companies, not Chinese ones. Don't buy Ameri... oops. Wrong board image

Should Michael Moore do a movie on the US and China?

If all the foriegn made parts were stripped from an "Americam made" Ford,
the remaining parts would fit in the trunk of a Volkwagan.
The old slogan "Buy American" is ridiculous.

And Sean Penn can be the narrator!!!

Matt Damon can do the dramatic re-enactments.

Al Gore can introduce his new pateneted carbon footprintrometer.

    Lord, help us all!!!!

  • Hi, Folks.

I am a newbie, so I have two reasons to be hesitant to post here (but I am enjoying the discussion very much). The second reason: I am one of the evil business men who transfers technology to China. My main job is to take my company's US-developed products and teach our Chinese company's employees how to manufacture them.

Guys, I'm not alone. Anyone, and I mean anyone, who is in mass-market retail is in China (or pretty much that region of the world: Vietnam, India, etc.). Plus, I've been to most of the major Chinese shipping hubs (like Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hong Kong, etc.), and let me tell you: It's a very scary sight. The shipping capacity PER CITY is in the millions of containers per year. Every time I fly into Hong Kong I see more container ships than I can count lined up at loading docs.

And I've seen the comments about Europe: I think they're wrong. In America, businesses are REQUIRED to list if a product is made in China (thanks, NAFTA!!!). Not always so in Europe. And, even if a European company is required, they don't often follow through. Also, the 2% or 3% duty is pretty much true throughout the world, but believe me: The EU is FIERCELY protective. Most countries have a MINIMUM 14% VAT (Value Added Tax) to goods not made within the EU; you just don't see that until you actually make a purchase. The funny thing is, though, they even charge this on OTHER EU country's manufactured products.

Anyway, there is one interesting shift that I see happening: More and more companies are BUYING or building their own plants, and outfitting them per company guidelines. It used to be that most American companies would out-source their products to Chinese companies. That has proven to be quite risky, and is not always successful. Instead, many companies are getting much better (read: much higher quality) products by owning the business, and running it according to American standards.

Why does that matter? Because it keeps the profits realized from transferring the manufacturing to China inside the American companies corporate structure. Yeah, I realize the manufacturing jobs are still being exported; but China is still pretty far behind in raw talent capable of running a quality shop with American standards. And I won't even start about localized sourcing: Quality is definitely earned in China; it is not expected. That means a new breed of American businessmen, engineers, technicians, etc. are needed to train our Chinese associates.

Now, I know you're all going to say: "So, once they're trained, then we're dead!!" right? Well, I think you're wrong. I strongly believe Americans have one quality that sets us apart from the rest of the world: ingenuity. I've been doing this "technology transfer" for 5 years now, and I've worked with a variety of Chinese individuals. They are GREAT at following a set plan. But ask them to think outside the box, or generate a good response to a manufacturing problem, and I believe we outperform them every time.

My company sill innovates here in the good ol' USA. And as long as that continues, we still have a chance at remaining the #1 economy in the world. But even I'll admit, it's a pretty slim chance...
    ASE Addict...but oh so poor!
  • Don't worry about the fakes. In the end we still get the last laugh. They're doomed to a life of slave labor, filthy living conditions, and tainted food. They'll never earn a good paycheck and they'll never live the good life. Serves them right.

China is noted for food shortages which has resulted in millions dying
of starvation. But today their greatest shortage is in women of child bearing age.
Young men outnumber women nearly two to one. Abortion and government
controls on the number of children allowed has favored the birth of boys over girls.
This problem may have ill effects on the entire world and make their counterfeits
    seem like a nothing thing.

Just to throw some gas on the fire. I saw a video on CNN about two years ago, and I only saw it once (I think they realized the inflammatory nature of it). There was a discussion of the trade deficit with China and the economic benefit to China, but the background was a video of brand new tanks rolling off a Chinese assembly line. Looked like something from a WWII propaganda film. Hmmm!!!!
