    I have 2 loose plated 1883's, one reeded one plain edge.... ( I have another in a capitol holder with a genuine 1883 $5 gold.... Not sure what the edge is on that coin).......

    I've always assumed that the plated nickels were modern platings and not contemporary to 1883......

    Is there a simple way to tell if they are genuine racketeer nickels or modern handiwork?????

    1st of all, do you have pictures??? image The genuine nickels usually are of High Grade and the gold plate has started to wear off or has almost totally worn off the coin.

    I'll try to take some later and post them...... and open the capitol holder too.... I'm almost cetain that the plain edge is modern plating as it is too gold and intact..... the reeded edge is partly worn and/or scratched away and could be legitimate........ but I have no real knowledge to base that on..... I'll give them a closer look later when I try to take pics....

    Fun and informative string. Thanks for asking about this. Now, I'll have to dig mine out to see if it's reeded or not...

    That was as I suspected.....

    The reeded edge and the loose plain edge were purchased separately from different dealers.....

    The plain edge looked too slick and clean appeared to have been plated on a worn coin (no spots where the plating has worn away, despite wear on the coin)... (paid about $10 for it in the early 1990's)

    The reeded edge seemed just the opposite, but of course nothing certain, just more probable.... (paid about $15 for it, since it was a reeded edge, although in poorer condition, at the 1997 ANA convention in NYC)

    The coin in the capitol holder could go either way, as it is still fairly high grade.... but it just seemed TOO good to expect it to be contemporary and not a modern fabrication, made just for inclusion in holders such as these..... (paid about $125 to $150 for the set on ebay about 5 or 6 years ago...)

    Not sure how anyone could prove one to be "real" as it is a plated nickel that anyone could do at any time. It is a great story that has gone well past any actual events.

    I agree, which is why I originally posted this question in the thread: "Is there a simple way to tell if they are genuine racketeer nickels or modern handiwork?????"

    Were the original racketeer nickels actually gold pated or were they painted. I somehow thought they had been coated with a paint that contained gold dust.
