Is it true that the Noyes large cent books will be part of a series encompassing the entire Sheldon

I was reading the recent issue of Penny Wise, and someone wrote as follows, "just yesterday the mail carrier delivered a copy of Bill Noyes' US Large Cents 1795-1797 ... . In caes the gentle reader is unfamiliar with this project, it is a planned series of large format books which will eventually show the Condition Census coins from the entire Sheldon catalog, including the NCs, all of them in full color ... and enlarged to about two diameters."

Does anyone have more information about this series of books? Over what period of time will the books be issued? Are they good to buy if a collector has no hope of ever owning the coins contained in the books? Any other comments?

With all due respect, that is a silly question.

In addition to the Sheldon series the Newcomb series is planned - my understanding, maybe incorrect is maybe 2 volumes per
year will be issued with a total of 8 books in total. For the at present blank spots in the books where no picture of a coin was available
at publication a sticker/picture will be issued when pictures do become available, again if my understanding is correct.

  • Longacre,

Hang in there. You'd be surprised at the affordability of many Condition Census coins. The rare varieties and those in VF 35 and above tend to get pricey. The stratospheric prices usually only tend to be at the top 5 or 6 grades or so. The published LC Condition Census was expanded to include the greater of the top 25 or the most available in 2005 when Noyes' published his latest update. This was the first time that the Newcombs were also included in the Condition Census. The new Noyes works are essentially a marriage of the 1991 volumes and the 2005 Condition census coins - illustrated with color photos for approximately the top 12 coins only.

I have found the Noyes' books to be wonderful attribution and die state illustrated guides, and invaluable for information and research into the coins listed in the CC. Not cheap, but well worthwhile for those interested. The next (2008) volume should cover the 1798-1799 years.
