If you had $20,000 to spend at a coin show this week.

What would you buy if you had $20,000 to spend at Long Beach this weekend. What coins do you think would have the best potential in that price range. I don't own any $20,000 coins, and I am not sure I could ever pull that trigger, but this is a question that has been on my mind all week.

Any suggestions?

A last minute plane ticket, hotel room for atleast 2 nights, food, and whatever's left on some Flowing Hair or Draped Bust Silver.
  • All expenses included to CA from IL, and the nicest 1955 DDO I could find! image
  • A selection from the following:
    1. Matte proof Lincoln cents (IF you could find any nice ones in PF65-66)--their prices having been climbing rapidly this year and will probably continue climbing into 2009
    2. Nice AU-58 Seated Liberty dollars--they are still too cheap
    3. MS65RD half cents and/or large cents
    4. PF65 half cent or large cent (IF you could find one)
    5. MS63+ Capped Bust quarters (much harder to find than other CB coins)
    6. Nice AU55+ Liberty Cap large cent

several half eagles from the 1840s-1860s. dirty and original. those cost money.
no shiny as the sun over dipped crap for cheap money, yet still cost too much.

Twenty grand would be enough to buy dinner for every hard working dealer who's set up shop there.
I'd party with them. They take enough crap, and the more time I take to learn about this business, the more I admire the fortitude it takes to make it in this business. Every day I scratch my head at the changing market and the rat race.

Kudos to everyone of you dealers and I hope you have one of your best shows ever ! I'm serious for a change.

I agree. Still very cheap in the light of golds recent moves. However, I have noticed PCGS price guide has ramped up the price on these. Also, several dealers have adjusted inventory prices on their websites to the upside.

A thou or two for transportation, lodging, entertaining etc.

1858 Seated Liberty dollar in PR 62,
    '55 DDO Lincoln in 64RB,
    '72 DDO Lincoln in 66RD.
If anything is left over then a nice common date toner Mercury in ~65FB.

When I first saw this thread, I also went to CRO's website to get some ideas. There are several coins currently listed on their site that I would like to own.

I like TwoSides2aCoin's idea of buying dinner for the dealers, although I wouldn't buy for every dealer...just a few of the ones that have been good to me in the past.

With the rest of the money, I'd look for high grade colonial era coins and pick and choose from whatever was available. Unfortunately, $20K probably wouldn't go very far!

MS65 Saints are my top choice. And by LB show time these will probably a bit cheaper than they are right now.

    Then an assortment of:

    MS64 $2-1/2 Libs
    MS66 $20 Saints
    MS64 or 65 $20 Libs
    MS63 or 65 $10 Libs
    MS65 $10 Indians

While I would love to buy some nice early seated halves in MS65-67, I doubt there would be many to choose from.

Seriously, if a small cent pattern (from the period 1856-1864) came available that I didn't have, the 20K would be handy.

Problem is, they aren't coming available and the ones I need are going to cost more. image
