Obverse: Star 1 points to upper edge of dentil. A die lump shows on drapery between “18” and clasp. Low date has a small blunt upper serif on 1. (Obverse shared with O-104.)
Reverse: High 50 C has a recut 5, showing left of upright. A is above M at base. Right side of I is under left side of T.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
Obverse: Star 1 points to upper half of dentil. Flag of 1 is recut at its tip, showing at left.
Reverse: Die has been lapped, resulting in eagle having no tail feathers. Curve of the upper right margin of shield extends too far left. A in STATES is rotated clockwise, and elevated above adjacent letters. Right side of I is under left side of T. (Reverse is LDS of O-116.)
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
The coin was struck using Obverse Die 3 and Reverse Die D. The obverse die had been used immediately prior to strike the very scarce O-119, R4- die marriage. The reverse die was used immediately after to strike the very scarce O-117, R4+ die marriage.
Quick identifiers are:
(1) On the obverse, a long, full serif on the 1.
(2) On the reverse the 5 is tall and open with a straight top. The tip of the olive stem is above an close to the C of 50 C.
(3) There are two short vertical divergent lines off the upper right corner of the shield.
This is one of my coins from the Mike Marker collection. Mike had graded it EF-45+. This is a duplicate coin that I will be parting with shorty.
Fever's camera would come in handy to see the true beauty of this coin. The center lacks hairlines and is a tiny bit shiny (a jeweler's cloth long, long ago, perhaps?) and there is bright iridescent blue Wayte Raymond album toning around the edges.
Here's a missing die marriage: The 1832 O-119, R4-
This die marriage was struck using Obverse Die 3 and Reverse Die G. The obverse die was used immediately after to strike the O-105, R3. This would be the last use of the reverse die which was used previously to strike the scarce 1832 O-108, R3.
This DM is easy to narrow down for attribution. The reverse has a recut A in STATES at the lower left serif. Stripes 4, 5, & 6 AND the upper portion of the cross bars are filled.
Because it shares the same reverse die as the O-108, the O-108 can be distinguished by the elevated hair curl between the R and T of LIBERTY. The O-119 does not have this hair curl.
(Speaking of hair: that line in the field by star 9 must be cat hair on my scanner - because I see no line on the coin using a 15x loupe. Yes. My name is Ed. I am a cat person.)
Obverse: Star 1 points to upper half of dentil. Flag of 1 is recut at its tip, showing at left. On this LDS, a crack shows at the rim by star 3, to lower chin, neck, curls, and ends at edge by star 10.
That's a pretty neat one mozin ! Not to many Bustie marriages with bisecting cracks like that one. Looks like they got a bit carried away when the lapped that reverse too. Edgar, did you go to the MSNS show?? Mike
Yes, my wife and I were there all day Friday - then I woke up with a head cold this morning and rolled over and went back to sleep! Met a couple of forum members that I'd never met before and that's always a pleasure.
Picked up one piece that I just posted to the 1830 thread.
Hello all I have been reading all your post. I have an 1832 capped bust that I think is an overton 104. This is what the holder said plus small letters. I am just getting into these coins, I am trying to learn the Overton varieties. here is what i see on reverse of coin in states the second t is lager than the other letter also in AMerica the AM is larger than the other letters. the shield on the eagles the bars run through the crest of shield. I will not lie I love these coins and this is my first one, but i am clueless I just like the darn coin. If you guys could be so kind to let me know the overton variety and was it worth $80 dollars?? Anyhow I collect modern and modern errors this will be fun learning and collecting them. Also I am in lew of an overton variety book to learn more.
Thanks and I really enjoy reading the post about these coins!!!
I have never owned a CBH until I picked this one up recently. It looked original to my eye and since I don't own an Overton I was hoping to get an attribution on the piece from one of you knowledgeable members.
You can see bits of metal on star 4 and the date and I think that the spot under Liberty's nose is a bit of metal that dirt clung to. I only have a 5X and that's what it looks like to me. Same with the upper loop in the 3.

Some diagnostics for 1832 O-103 R1:
Obverse: Star 1 points to upper edge of dentil. A die lump shows on drapery between “18” and clasp. Low date has a small blunt upper serif on 1. (Obverse shared with O-104.)
Reverse: High 50 C has a recut 5, showing left of upright. A is above M at base. Right side of I is under left side of T.
I bought this 1832 O-105a, R4 to replace my EF-45 set piece.
This O-105a is still in an ANACS AU-53 slab. I suspect maybe it should be an AU-50.
My "old" EF-45 is ex NGC (also ex Reiver) and shows more wear than this "new coin."
The "new coin" has some dark spots on it. To me, it looks like it needs to be broken out and cleaned with Acetone.
Any comments:
It's a CRUSTY Bustie.
And a very good upgrade since it's been elevated to R-4.
Some diagnostics for 1832 O-120 R3:
Obverse: Star 1 points to upper half of dentil. Flag of 1 is recut at its tip, showing at left.
Reverse: Die has been lapped, resulting in eagle having no tail feathers. Curve of the upper right margin of shield extends too far left. A in STATES is rotated clockwise, and elevated above adjacent letters. Right side of I is under left side of T. (Reverse is LDS of O-116.)
Another 1832 O-101a
My only CBH happens to be an 1832...

Welcome to our CU Capped Bust Half Dollar series. That Teaparty Bustie has some beautiful toning.
Thanks, Mozin, for the compliments.
I don't know one Overton from another - can anyone tell me - from the image I posted - which O# ??
Really appreciate it.

This coin is not near as ugly as this pic,the 'A' die state shows no milling and all stars drawn to the edge.
Rev shows stripes 4,5,6, partially filled, and the upper part of the crossbars filled. The wear on this one adds to the effect.
Here's another example of the 1832 O-105, R3
The coin was struck using Obverse Die 3 and Reverse Die D. The obverse die had been used immediately prior to strike the very scarce O-119, R4- die marriage. The reverse die was used immediately after to strike the very scarce O-117, R4+ die marriage.

I agree with your coin being O-107.
You can see bits of metal on star 4 and the date and I think that the spot under Liberty's nose is a bit of metal that dirt clung to.
I only have a 5X and that's what it looks like to me. Same with the upper loop in the 3.

Thanks for posting your coins! The 104 and 107 just sing to me and you've done a nice job in acquiring a matched set across the date.
