Nice. I looked at one a couple weeks ago that had a checkerboard toning pattern on the face where it had been sitting against the bag - strange looking to say the least.

  • It is a nice looking coin. I have seen very few pretty toned GSAs. If pretty toners start appearing in significant numbers in GSA holders, someone is likely making them today. My opinion is that there is about a 80% chance that the pretty toning on the coin was deliberately done during the past two years. Buy them if you like them.

    RedTiger,

I agree with your assessment. Most of the GSA's that are toned are monochrome and not all that attractive. That said, this one looks legit to me.

It's not AT, and there is no reason to think the GSA slabs are the subject of a toning ring.

Remember there were a ton of GSA coins, and before slabbing they sat around it bags in vaults. I would expect a lot of them to have toning of some sort.

    Nice coin.
    I brake for ear bars.
  • I think it is NT also.

somehow toned gsa coins are housed in cases labeled only with "silver dollar", without "uncirculated"

<< <i>somehow toned gsa coins are housed in cases labeled only with "silver dollar", without "uncirculated" >>

That's because, at the time, the mint considered them damaged goods.

Edited to add: Which is a good indication that the toning is not recent.

  • Thanks for the reminder about the toned GSAs that got sold in the holders without "uncirculated" on the label. Having that kind of holder greatly increases the chances of an original toned coin. Almost all those labeled uncirculated went into the holder as white coins.

As far as conspiracies and organized rings, I'm sure there is more than one expert doc trying out various methods, trying to get pretty toning on some GSAs in the holders. If and when they perfect their dark arts, the way collectors will know is by observing a big increase in supply.

wow, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

I saw toned gsa in a "uncirculated silver dollar" case, then, is it likely that this was AT?

    Hoard the keys.
  • That's a nice crescent. Can't numerical grade with these pics but I give this coin a grade of super toner!

  • Hi I just found a way to post pics myself . Open a www.photobucket.com free account Then upload to a album. Copy and paste the url at the bottom of the pic that starts with IMG and ends with IMG . They should show up when you post.
