Yep, removed mint mark. Also looks like a little photoshop was applied in that area.

Heck no!....I was just showing the forum..Every one of the 1922 Plains I have seen, no matter what the grade, is always weak on the "In God We" part of the "In God We trust"...This one is just too clean...

Removed mintmark, you can see in the photo whoever removed it went a little deeper than he had to!

Definately removed MM. You can see the shadows of the D. Also the two 2's are the same. Real 22 P's the first two is weaker than the last. Even if it was real, I would never buy a coin like this raw.

Removed MM- the '22 no D, especially with the strong reverse, is a very 'mushy' looking coin, with the worst of it on the left side of the obverse. That one looks too good. And they did a bad job of covering up the area where the mintmark was... even knowing all that, I'd never buy one off eBay raw...

I just got an email from the seller...he was none too happy about this forum taking a negative look on that coin..He needs to get it certified...That should do several things...

Here's the reply I got:

I have had this coin looked at by a few dealers and one Certified PCGS guy who all say it is authentic. If I thought for a moment this was a fake it would have never been put on auction, all I have is my reputation, and it's not worth tarnishing over ANY amount of money or ANY coin.
You are right getting it slabbed and authenticated would bring more money, but I just bought this coin just over two weeks ago had some men look at it and listed it. If it is a fake, it has fooled quite a few. Also, have you seen PCGS's rates?

Thank you all for sending me an email, I do appreciate it, honestly, and will always read and reply to anything.

That's too bad. He should use the expertise provided, and learn from it to avoid making this mistake in the future.

Perhaps he realized it might be a good idea to get it authenticated by a reputable TPG.

He may have meant a PCGS authorized dealer. Of course, there are plenty of PCGS dealers who can't correctly authenticate coins.

Hopefully, he can return it to the person he bought it from. It is obviously altered. It has none of the die characteristics of a genuine 22 no-D strong reverse.

Here is Stewart Blay's 1922 No-D in PCGS MS64RED. Even in high mint state grades, the diagnostics are there and unmistakable. One can certainly see that 'TRUST' is clearly sharper than the rest of the motto and 'TY' in 'Liberty' is mushier than the rest of the word. It is somewhat difficult to see, from this image, that the second 2 in the date is sharper than the first.

Compare with the eBay coin and there is no comparison, the eBay coin has definitely been altered, without a doubt. I don't care who that guy says he talked to.

Ehh, I was gonna link the eBay image, but see it is hosted elsewhere. Being that this seller apparently knows of this thread, I'm not gonna give him the opportunty to switch images on me

Why did he have to mention the high PCGS rates. They are such a low percentage of the total coin's value, plus he stated himself that it would probably bring more money in the holder so if it was legit it is a win, win situation. Unfortunately it is not legit so it would be a waste of a grading fee.
