It is a question only you can answer

I love collecting coins.... but maybe I'm heading down the wrong path value-wise.

For instance - yesterday I was oh-so-close to buying a PCGS 1955ddo in AU58. That's like $1,600. That's like 4 years worth of ski passes or 2 months in Europe. Don't get me wrong... I LOVE collecting coins.... but maybe I'd be better off buying $20.00 coins and spending the summers sipping tropical drinks.

I've got some cash saved, but there is no way I can max out my 403b. $15,500 per year is a bit above and beyond what I'll be investing image

    Then go with your heart

Buy the ddo, sit back for a few months re gain a little composure- enjoy your life. When you hit 40-45 then think about sellin off coins and have fun with that.

Enjoy teaching the young kids the difference between what is right and what is wrong- THAT IS VITAL.

As for finding a new job - forget that. I love what I do and feel great about doing it. image >>

I'm a teacher 12 years into my career. I started at 22. I've found a way to balance travel, marriage, coin collecting and owning a home. You can too if you know how to budget your money and time. I think you'll regret selling your collection, especially if you truly love it. Why give up what you enjoy? It sounds to me like you know how to save money and at the very least have a nice start to a long term investment. Keep the coins you absolutely love, focus your collection on 1 or 2 series and enjoy traveling.

Option #2: Get married so you have 2 incomes and your problems are solved (or maybe they have just begun)...
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

  • Thanks for all the advice, folks. I've decided my coins would make a great down payment on a house. I enjoy looking at pictures of coins and reading about coins about as much as looking at mine, anyway!

    Great closing to your thread.

After retiring from the Army, I now teach high school. Although the pay is not that great, it could be worse. But the good news is, I like the kids. It's a great honor to teach and mold young minds. I especially like leading them in the pledge everyday.

Keep the coins. It's obvious your "hooked", just like us.

    Good luck in school.

Sounds to me like your heart is pulling you toward selling your coins so that you can do some things you would otherwise not be able to do. Since you are only 23, you have a lot of time to build another coin collection, save for retirement, buy a house, etc. I think you should travel and have some adventures and experience all that life has to offer...you can always come back to coins.

This is especially true if the coins in your current collection are fairly easy to replace. By that I mean if your coins are relatively common and can be found in the grade you like on most any bourse floor, go ahead and sell. If, on the other hand, you have any great rarities that would not be easy to replace, keep those because you'll regret selling them later on.

Coin collecting can be one of the great passions in life, but it should not prevent you from experiencing other great passions! image
