Capped Bust Half Collectors...how can you tell if there is luster under toning? Guess the grade on

I'm new to this series and was curious to know how one can tell if there is luster under toning on a CBH?

I recently purchased an 1809 CBH PCGS (see below) with dull washed out surfaces, and thinking about returning it because of its lifeless appearance. Can you help me determine if there is any luster under this toning.

Guess the grade and the variety.

Thanks

What makes this coin's toning appealing? It looks so dull and washed out. The surfaces are VERY VERY nice but lifeless, don't you think?

    Here are the seller's pics...

  • The seller's pics make it look even better then the first pics. That one is definitely a keeper in my eyes.image

    Nice coin drdrm,
I don't see this one grading any higher than EF with the rub visible. In this grade, only some luster peeking around some devices is all that is needed for the grade.

I've seen this coin in person. Nice dusty dirt surfaces. IMO the color of the images (and the sellers too) look nothing like the coin in person. The holder on the reverse is soooo scratched up (at least it was when I seen it) that one has a hard time evaluating the coin on the reverse.

Sorry, no happy talk. image It does have a nice strike for an 09 though. Overpriced....... back it goes or back it went.

It looks like a nice coin. As for the price, I have no clue what you paid, but if you think that is a problem coin then you should take a step away from this series and work with folks who know it better.

Tom, as for my remarks, I guess I did have some happy talkimage. I liked the coin, but considering it in balance and the price associated with it, and the reverse holder was soooo scratched up I couldn't evaluate the darn thing....... back it went. I've rarely come across a holder I couldn't see what I needed to see. Actually it kinda chapped my hide so as much as I hate to return a coin...... back it went fast.
