Dropping a few rarities into circulation........

A nice thread was on the forum yesterday from a member who found a 1909 VDB Cent in change. Though the coin was worth perhaps $5, it was a great and unusual find, worthy of the attention received. I have often thought of "spending" moderate priced rarities to get them back into circulation. Some would be picked up by a sharp eyed clerk, others by a young collector and I am sure a few would be plucked by the nice folks at Coinstar.
Is this a good idea, or would it somehow tarnish the legitimacy of the find? Of course the discoverers of these coins would never know the intent. What do you think.

Apropos of the coin posse/aka caca: "The longer he spoke of his honor, the tighter I held to my purse."
It would get people to look at their change.

Maybe we could take up a collection ( coins or donations ), and drop neat coins into circulation from several different parts of the country and give a reward of some kind to whoever finds those coins in circulation.
They don't have to be expensive coins. Just neat older ones that do not circulate anymore.
Maybe Numis News and Coin World would do a press release about it. I would certainly add the press release to the coin articles section of my website which gets visited quite a bit and even add it to my weekly mailer which goes to thousands of people.

Great idea. I have a few rolls of Wheat cents that I could start with (common dates from the 20's & 30's), a few dateless Buff's can go too.
What the heck, I'll even go spend the 09 VDB!

Count me in as well. I need to go and look in the toy box for what can be spent.
Who wants to write the press release?
Too premature for that?

It is a Christmas tradition here in Chicago!
What a neat idea if more people did this. Imagine the look on a kid's face when they see a Buffalo or maybe a merc or two?
Thanks

But I don't mind putting a few Wheaties or a crappy IHC or silver dime back into change.
I do like giving a cool old coin as a tip periodically- then you can gauge the person's reaction. But I make sure to include a sufficient amount of real, "spendable" money, too. If, for example, you figured you owed about a ten- or fifteen-dollar tip to a waiter and you left a single circulated Peace dollar worth about that much on the table, for example, they might consider you a cheapskate.
Not everybody "gets it". It's fun to watch those who do, though.
