Cancelling a sale on Ebay

You receive an order for a $10,000.00 coin from a brand new ebayer who signed up the day of the transaction with zero transactions of any kind. You have specified in your terms that payment is to be received within 5 days via check, money orders or bank check.

Meanwhile, Ebay has already charged your account roughly $350 bucks in fees. Far as I'm concerned there is no transaction and I'd like to just cancel the sale. I'm told that ebay will NOT allow me to cancel the sale for 2 weeks and even then EBAY gives the buyer a chance to make good, despite it then being 2 weeks afterwards. Hence the 350.00 is charged, the inventory is tied up for a couple of weeks and that's the way it goes.

Is that how these transactions work with ebay?

You can file the unpaid item dispute a week after the auction ends, and then you can close it on the 8th day after that to get the FVF credit. So, effectively yes, it is a couple weeks. I just did two over the last few days. Small ones, though.

Unfortunatley it sucks. I have one right now that I know the guy isnt going to pay, and would like to move it while gold is up, but cant until the 8th day?

2 weeks is too long to be awaiting payment in this volatile gold market, just my 2 cents. Ebay is full of it with some of their policies.

JD: Move the coin, and if necessary be prepared to replace it just in case the seller comes through. Your downside is picking up a neg.

If a seller was not communicating back or sent something indicating they were probably not going to pay, I would not assume the market risk of gold in this risky environment. It could be that the seller has decided to wait as long as possible to see what gold is going to do. If it opens up higher on Monday they just may decide to buy knowing they made additional money by waiting. If it drops, they'll bail.

There is an out. You can file a dispute and break it off on the grounds that you no longer wish to go thru with this transaction for failure to verify proof of identity.

Gut instinct is it'a a nonsense order. That's my gut instinct. But we checked the identity thru ebay and have the phone number etc which I am going to call on monday and verify. Ebay only shows a city, state and telephone. No address.

Roadrunner, it's a 1835 Quarter Eagle in PCGS MS-63 so I can't short that one obviously. Dang.

Best way to avoid this is to specify no bidders with zero feedback and then cancel the bid when it is entered.

I am guessing that it is a store item if the fee is $350 (Ebay auction would be about $165). Though it may take you two weeks to get a credit on the fee, you certainly may relist the coin much sooner, especially since you stated that payment is due in 5 days.

Ebay's suggestion is to have the 'pay immediately' option.

I would not accept a credit card or paypal on a 10K sale. No way.

Ebay called me about 30 minutes ago. The rep told me that they "ebay" was unable to warn me that the buyer of the 10K coin was under suspicion and to be suspended. The buyer was able to buy the coin before he was suspended. I'll post the ebay ID ( Think I should post his name and address he gave in Pennsylvania?)

They went on to tell me that a year ago they set limits on my account and that this order along with others hit the limit. They told me they removed the limits and apologized for the inconvenience. All in all it was a good telephone call update from ebay. I told him that I realize they have to keep people on a short leash in the beginning in order to establish a track record but that communicating just how short that leash is would be helpful.

Glad you had a good outcome on this, it seems there are some kids who like to screw with auctions like this, eBay does very little to help the seller in these situations, glad yours work out.

If it happened again, you could always relist after 5 days because your terms were not met, then refuse a check if it shows up and get your fees back on eBay's time schedule.

On the seller's preference you can set it to disallow bids from zero feedback buyers. If they email you and you approve, you can exempt them from your blocks.

Yes but can you disallow a BIN or purchase from a store listing? That's what this was.

Same thing happened to me three weeks ago. $9995 coin, $4.95 s&h, so essentially $10,000. Buyer registered the previous day. Zero feedback, of course. Shipping address in Pennsylvania. I didn't mention it, knew it was bogus being a sceptic and all, and had a hunch it might be some unwell individual on this forum and didn't want to give them the satisfaction by seeing me complain here.

I was going to mention it that way, I don't doubt some of the previous trouble makers that were on the board have a hand in some of the problems for the current members.
