Research, research, research. I think too many people are too eager to spend money and get the coins in their set without analyzing appropriate things like, the market, pop reports, etc. I think this extremely important for any one specializing in a certain series. Researching typical examples of the coin like date XXXX is known to have a weak strike, etc.

More dough. More knowledge. More quality coins.
  • Getting better at coin photos would be nice.
I've got all my collection entered in a spreadsheet, just must maintain it.
Learning more is good (RWB books next on the buy list).
Improving methods and materials is always a plus.
Getting deeper into the history of these little numbers is a must.
    Yeah, more money.
I guess about everything needs improvement.

BTW, if I had more money, I would not be a better collector. I would, however, buy more coins.

In fact, having less money can help one to become a better collector, or at least to become a better collector more quickly.

    More dough.....period.

Because more dough leads to more coins which means more grading, more buying and selling and ultimately more KNOWLEDGE!

Better camera and the knowledge to use it.
And as mentioned more money so the higher quality coins would be available to me.
  • It's funny how many people said "more money."

I am not being denegrating to those that answered this way; I often think that it would be nice to have more money to burn in the hobby. However, I feel blessed and fortunate to have such an excess of money that I can partake in a hobby like this one. The last decade, I have spend many months in third world countries; mostly in Asia and South America. I spent more on an AU 1909 $5 gold piece the other day than most people in these countries make in an entire year. I live like a king compared to the people who I have befriended in these suffering parts of the world.

I have lots of money in stocks and bonds. Hopefully, these investments will do very well and I will be able retire very comfortably with these funds.

Then I can be the best collector possible and donate the sale of my entire collection to philanthropic persuits. My entire collection now would feed a Tibet village for several years; imagine what it could do in several more decades if I continue to collect. I could be like a miniature Warren Buffet.

Having money doesn't neccesarily equate to having a great collection. A guy still needs some ----- brains as well......get my point! image

  • learn that just because a coin is given a certain grade doesnt mean its a great example and that there are low ends, as well as, high ends to every grade (ie read need to learn how to cherrypick) - also would like to learn how to take exceptional pics of my coins so that I can post them on this forum - also learn how to tell the difference between whizzed, cleaned, altered surfaces etc so that I can make better decisions - is that all???

Read more, study more, see more coins and spend more time talking to experts in your series.

To the extent that money allows you to do any of these things, that's good. But having more money doesn't make you a better collector. Sometimes it just means you can buy more crap.

Work with better dealers. At some point you need to advance beyond the local B&M shop and go from there. My local B&M scene lasted about 8 years once I became serious. Of course w/o the internet back then things happened much more slowly. While I did attend major auctions within 3-4 years of getting serious it still wasn't enough. Today's plethora of slabs and shows, and the internet offers unprecedented methods to step up your knowledge.

Frequenting B&M shops that know very little about your areas of interest is also very helpful. There are lots of such shops around.

For many collectors, having more money certainly doesn't hurt for acquisitions either. It certainly wouldn't hurt for this. All I can say is Wow.... Awesome piece imageimage

I need to handle more coins.

I need to find a shop where in addition to just spending my money I can get the owner to say anything besides "I dunno" when asked a question.

[L=Text BTW, if I had more money, I would not be a better collector. I would, however, buy more coins. ]

I think that says it all. Money itself does not create the required skills and knowledge to be a better numismatist.

    1. Developing plans to improve grading skills; 2. Recognizing coins that are quality for the grade; 3. recognize varieties within various series that are of interest; 4. Having acess to a decent library of reference materials; 5. Attending coin shows and auctions and looking at coins in hand instead of relying on images

these are just some examples. If one comtemplates spending $$$$$ on coins, take the time to learn to grade and spend some $$$ on references

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

I guess I could quit promoting widgets and start hanging with you classic guys. That would probably help me as a collector, but we have to go as fast as the slowest man, because our team is dependent on the little guys not falling between the cracks. They are our future and new collectors are seldom ready to jump in to HIGH DOLLAR coins. Most of us start with simplicity. I think that's important to hold on to.

This is the most salient point thus far in this thread. Sure more money is always better, but sometimes having the money makes us impatient. And I can show you lot's of mistakes I own due to impatience. For me the thing I need to be a better collector is patience. I need to be able to take the time to really "look" at what I want to buy/accomplish and get better educated and definately more sharply focused in that time.

So I would say what would make me a better collector is having more time to focus, and that is where that pesky little job thing gets in the way. So I guess it does get back to money. But money to buy time and coins.
