How many times can I send platinum back

I ordered the 2007 platinum within a half hour of it going on line. I had been on back order for almost 2 months and finally got my coins. The proof was acceptable, but the UNCs were awful. Scratches, milk spots....very poor QC or maybe I got someone elses return. I returned the UNCs for replacement....just got the replacements today. The half is good but the ouncer again has spots! I plan on sending it back again. How many times can I do this? ........I bet 70 grades will be a little rarer this year......

Milk spots on Plat, thought that was only the ASE's?

  • I think the spots are from oil splater? I wish I could take a decent picture of it. They appear to have a shiney halo effect. I thought that was called milk spots but they are not white.
  • Why not buy them at a store, so you can visually inspect them? I refuse to buy mint products by mail because of quality issues- I'm too fussy and don't want to keep sending stuff back.

    greedygeek,

You are not alone. I had to go through so many returns this year to get my order right! The worst part is their customer service (I think I just offended the word "service") is horrible!!!

I just returned my burnished set for the 2nd time yesterday. The quarter oz. had scrapes right across Liberty's face and neck. The half oz. had a dirty die when struck. I had a long chat with the customer service rep and tried to motivate her to explain the problems in depth to her supervisors, but my expectations for any improvements at this point are pretty low.

I know when I have customers that aren't satisfied... I keep hearing from them until they are.

Bingo. The mint recycles the returns. You return your defective coins and you'll get someone elses rejects and he'll get yours.

I always ask for a refund when I do returns. I don't trust them as far as I can see...

I sent my 2007 plat back because of a spot. I told the mint to just keep ith and refund my cash.

  • Send them back, they have plenty!
  • I believe you can return them as many times as you can afford to pay the return postage!

Actually, they will refund your return postage too...
  • Talked to a mint rep before I returned my coins. I can return as many times as I care to. They claim any return marked "damaged" is melted and not sent out again. And that there will NOT be an anniversary set this year............on another subject.

I didnt ask about refund of shipping, Neostar.....how do I claim it?

Well anyway....dont settle for what they are sending (since there are plenty to melt)

If you want to improve QC you've already done the best possible thing - return the coins. They can ignore your letters and phone calls about quality but the day will come when one of the honchos at the Mint get his butt chewed over the number of returns. Things will change pretty quickly once the boss gets yelled at.

    Great job greedygeek!!!

If you don't like what they sell you, send it back! I usually mail the package with shipping confirmation or something I could use to keep track of it. As soon as they get it they will process the package in and send you an email to let you know they have received your package. Once I know they received it I call the mint back and tell them that I paid X amount of money for the return on that order. They'll mail you a check back...
  • Third round of returns still flunk..........sad but back they go again. Be careful with the credit card charges, as they are quick to bill for the new coins but slow to credit it back (if you like to pay off your card every month like me). This really is amazing how poor the QC is this year.........I mean what are the odds?
  • yes, what ARE the odds? Even considering our small little "sampling group", taking the number of reported returns among this group and extrapolating that to an overall population of mint products and buyers, WOW! I wonder what their failure rate really is?

Things will never change as long as you have many, many people reselling mint products and not caring about poor quality products that they will never report as being of unacceptable quality. Shame on the resellers for aggravating an already abysmal quality control problem.

Well, I have had pretty good luck on at least the platinums but I thnk my W unc.s and proofs are basically all 69s as there seems to be very minor edge problems on the inner edge right next to the field and also pinpoint luster breaks which I think are due to die deterioration.

I bought my '07 silver proof sets at the mint kiosk in DC and noted that the prezzie proofs were nearly all discolored with those same pinpoint luster breaks even obvious in the poor lighting.

Also noted that the W unc. platinum sets have the capsules in a death grip and you nearly have to destroy the box liner to get the coins out to look at the reverses.

  • Fourth round were finally keepers. Fed ex just dropped off a one ounce unc w and 1/2 proof today. Was relieved to find them in a collectable state. Especially with the repricing hold on the unc ws. Wish everyone else better luck with returns....funny how I feel lucky after four tries.

  • Greedy,

Good for you. I am focusing on good quality 2007 unc-w plats right now too. Now is the time to get the high grade/condition coins in hand. They will more than likely not be as rare as 06-w but they may well be just as rare in good shape. The half is a waste land.

I'd send it back once. When the mint has no customers, they'll hire a quality control team and not a minute before.

I got my 1/2 oz MS Plat W two weeks ago. Looked good to me. Whether it makes 70. I will let PCGS make that determination.
