Need help from the morgan pro's, 1881 S
I just picked up this coin cheap at a local coin shop. When i looked at it seems to me it looks proof like and the obverse may have a DD date and the lower stars look like they are doubled as well. Do any of you aggree here or is it just me? Im no pro when it comes to Morgans. I will try and get better pics so i can see if you guys can give your opinion on grade, If you can now that would be great!

Ahhh Russ, so sure of himself yet often mistaken about matters of toning.
The same Russ that slammed a roll of Kennedy halves in one thread and then changed his mind to being 90% certain about their NT nature in another once they were in-hand......
How you can call that AT given the obviously strange light source CLEARLY evident in the pics is a real miracle! Shoot, at least wait for some better pics my eager friend.

If you think that shade of purple is natural on Morgans, I'll be happy to make you as many as you'd like. It takes about an hour with steam, sulfur, and a piece of canvas.
Oh, and BTW, perhaps you should re-read those Kennedy threads before you make stupid statements. I didn't "slam" anything, I drew a logical conclusion that they could not have toned that way from roll storage. And, they didn't. After viewing one in-hand I concluded that it was natural and PCGS agreed. Mistaken? Nope.

Yeah, "clearly" evident because he posted that it is.

Let's wait till we have a better, balanced image.
<< <i>dj take a look at back side of her cap below the M is that a scratch or is it doulbled? the date not to sure looks like what i call a date slide not sure the tec name for this i'm sure someone will correct me >>
Im not sure I figured since i already have a free grade with NGC i just mailed her off to see what happens. I put variety plus so if they find anything hopefully they put it on the label. As far as the colors go on this coin, there is no shades of purple ect. The lighting is what makes the toning look more juiced (took pic under a desk magnifier with a 100w bulb inches away at a slight angle). In hand it is a very pleasing tone that is not a monster at all. Here is a better pic of the date i took before i mailed it. The date lookes doubled at the bottom half as well as some of the lower stars.
Second, the 1881-s is probably the most common Morgan in MS65 and higher. There are some outstanding examples available of this date and they can be found at just about any coin show.
Your example does not look to be NT from the images posted. Off hand, I do not know if the 81-s has any VAMS WITH DOUBLED STARS...
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
I think that most would agree from the pics (even BEFORE we were subsequently told) that the lighting is strange. Hence, my ideas that it is CLEARLY evident to most.
Even with the Kennedys in-hand, you were 90% sure. That's kind of like being 90% pregnant. Not much of a stance on anything.
But I will say that you're 100% dependable to be touchy when your "wisdom" is questioned.
<< <i>Sheesh, a wee touchy Russ? >>
Touchy? Nope. I simply provided the response you asked for with your lame comments.
<< <i>Hence, my ideas that it is CLEARLY evident to most. >>
It became evident to you after he posted that it was lighting. Before that, you didn't have a clue.

There is no such thing as "100%" certainty on many toned coins. Anybody who claims otherwise is a liar.

Yes, the lighting on the pics looks weird. Seriously, you can't tell that? I know you wish that I wasn't thinking this way before we were told that the lighting is weird, but I really do think that MOST people (not you) would look at those pics and think the same......you know, 'cause the lighting looks weird on them....sheesh.
Anyways, have a great weekend my testy friend! I gotta go enjoy some of this Seattle sun.
