buy the coin not the holder? 1870-S half eagle in strange plastic. hucky on ebay?

fcfc Posts: 12,805 ✭✭✭
ebay auction for 1870-S

You know, PCGS has never graded a MS 1870S half eagle. The finest
known are 6 AU55s.

even if this coin is cleaned, it is probably the best I could ever hope
to afford right now. It reminds me of ANACS slabs that used to sell
on heritage, net graded!, that looked better then PCGS or NGC coins
right next to them over the years.

i could see this coin cracked out and sent to NGC and graded if
the pictures are not hiding anything crazy.

who is hucky and why does he play this game? why not send it
to ANACS? the coin appears to be real after i compared it to several
others from heritage archives.

i like it at 500, but know it will sell for more then i can afford.

what do you folks think of this strange situation on a tough tough
date that has any luster left on it at all.

I would be much more interested if it were an 1870-S half dime, quarter, or Seated dollar. image

yes, this whole situation is just wrong. that coin may not be wanted
by a million collectors, but it is a true key in that shape.

i am trying to find out the big problem with it. a rim problem?

turn it a slightly diff way and all of a sudden hair line city?

when i said i like it at 500, that was the gamble type thinking.
    red or black.

if it was in ANACS plastic, i would have no problem doubling that,
easily. it looks like from those pics. pleasant.

edited to add: lol and i knew i was not bidding as soon as i mentioned it here. now almost a 1000 ;-)

I know Hucky(Mike). He's a pretty good guy. He gets some really nice stuff sometimes. He has a slabbing set up in his shop- I think he does a lot of slabbing for others too. I could get you his phone number if you want to ask him about that coin in person. image

interesting info darktone. i just sold my fish tank and i am flush
with cash. i know better though to play this game. i will simply
wait until OCT and the coin show in CT.

once i mentioned it here, i knew it was too late to play and it
was wishful thinking i could ever afford it at less then 1500.

AND have the coin all there. something is wrong. it is too good to be
true. hucky cannot be dumb. if the coin could slab at ngc/pcgs they
    would have.

Do you think it might be fixed, altered, or possibly even a fake in that good of condition,, the most obvious question is,, if it's real and a no problem coin in this good of condition, Why is it not in a better grading service holder,??????????? ... image

I'm also curious about hucky, but his feedback seems to be quite good. If you like the coin, I'd advise calling him as Darktone suggests. This worst thing you can do is watch it go by and wonder.

The coin itself looks decent. It's true, something worth $300 might be hidden. What's his return policy?

Who else has had dealings with hucky? I see his stuff from time to time and I am somewhat tempted.

mrE just had a thread like this. he bought a D half eagle in some turd world slab, and it had its rim filed. instant BB anywhere yet
in a turd world slab. no mention of it on the slab, just a net grade.

i have a feeling the same thing is going on here. crack it out,
    no return policy.

why would hucky want to leave money on the table? it does not
add up. in a net ANACS slab that coin would do well at heritage.

I am not sure if I responded to your PM (been busy with other stuff), but as a rule of thumb, on ebay and elsewhere, an experienced seller will not sell a rare date gold coin in a home-made slab, unless the coin is a no-grade at PCGS or NGC (or both). Based on the recent MrEureka experience, I am even more distrustful of the self-made or third tier slab than ever before. They are worse than raw. Sure, you might miss out on a good deal or two, but if you avoid auctions like these, you will save yourself a lot of aggravation. You can then go on to debate what the coin is worth as a "problem coin", but its liquidity is a small fraction of what it would be if it was not a "problem coin". If you are pretty sure that you are never going to sell it or do not care about what its worth, by all means, buy it if you like it.

I think I did business with "hucky" way back when, with some world coins.

The ID rings a bell, anyway. As I recall, he was OK. If he wasn't, I would remember more.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

I agree with Rob...I did business with him ~5 years ago, when I was starting out again. Average items (proof sets/mint sets/proof SAEs). Had to return a couple that looked like someone had opened the containers, used them as hockey pucks, then put them back in, but the others were "Ok" (nothing superb, nothing bad) and I had no problems with the returns (even though I anticipated issues...I had none).

For the auction, it says right there that it is cleaned but MS details. I know nothing about gold so I can't say if it is AU or MS for details, or whatnot, but he does state it is cleaned.....hence, most likely, that it isn't in PCGS/NGC slabbing. As for ANACS....if he can self-slab, why bother with ANACS? Looks like he did ok anyway.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Looks like he did ok anyway.

prob ripped the coin off someone for a 1000. sent to anacs and got a net
50 grade or worse for some other problem we do not see.

1050 he has in it so far. now self slab with MS net. instant 1000 bump
when he was probably trying at first for 2000 bump. no return if you bust it out right?

oh yea, that type of person always does ok.. hm :-P

i hope the buyer gets what he hopes.

lol. good one. they would not be in business long making decisions like that.
something tells me hucky is smarter then that.

Who are all of the bidders with asterisks? Is that what ebay shows now for various bidders instead of bidder 1, bidder 2, bidder 3, etc?

Two guys (with very low feedback histories) ran it a long way up the price ladder.

The coin doesn't look quite as good at $2,700 as it did for $500.

Added: but hey, 7 day return, no questions asked. That's not too bad.

not really. if the coin was raw i would agree with that.
but as soon as you crack it out for a real look, your return policy goes to the crapper.

the slab could be the key to getting rid of this coin. the dealer should know
his fake slab tpg should be worse then raw.
