Finally got the color right but details suck...

I reshot this buff today and much to my surprise the pics finally reflect the pretty color of the coin. That said... the new pics don't show hardly any detail. This picture taking... especially in NGC slabs is hard for me. Anyway here's a fairly inexpensive albeit very pretty nickel. This is exactly how the picture "took" no adjustments other than cropping.

Taking a picture of the whole slab limits the lighting that you can get on the nickel. If you can brings the lights in to a higher angle which will cause glare on the slab, the nickel will get better lighting.

Thanks Mark. Here's what it looks like with the lights almost right over it... better details but I wash out the color

I've found that if you tilt the slab a 1/4 inch or so the detail is captured.

Did you take the pic at 90 degrees?

Either you're underexposed and/or your white balance is off, and the slab material doesn't look white.

I find it necessary to set EV at +0.7 with my camera when shooting NGC or old ANACS slabs, to compensate for the underexposure caused by the white.

  • Do you have the camera backed off some and using macro, or using super macro and right on the coin? A little less light might help too....lower wattage bulfbs or setting lights higher. I can't tell if it's the coin or not but it looks like it's been sharpened a little too much and getting some pixelation.

Are you by chance using revel bulbs?
They give that pink cast to my pictures. I put a piece of white paper on top of the slab and set white balance then shoot.

I actually didn't think the thread would get "legs" and soon enough smoeone will scream "Spammer" image

I have 2 lights and yes one of them is a "reveal" 60 watt. The other is one of those snow-cone looking swirled up jobs that says 10 watt (but its really bright).

I took the close ups a long time ago and don't remember what I did back then. For the "slab" picture my camera is a point and shoot nothing fancy Olympus. I use a small tripod; time delay; and Macro. If it has a white balance; I don't have any idea of how to use it or where its at.

If I could quit buying coins for awhile maybe I could afford a better camera... image

Anyway, thanks everyone for the help.

We'd better not discuss this particular coin any more though.
  • I know the white balance on my Olympus is in the menu where it gives you a choice of auto, flash, cloudy,etc...custom is one of the choices. I can't tell you just where right now since my daughter has borrowed that camera. I would use 2 bulbs alike since the light has different wavelengths, you're going to get different colors on different parts of the picture. White balance is also easy to correct in a photo editing program.
