I got in the mail today, a copy of the Stack's Lovejoy sale from 1990 which has a decent plate of an unc 74-CC.
Rarer?
The 78-S
Which is a better deal?
Neither....the problem with the 78-S is there are very few mid-grade examples for the collector to buy. The choice for the 78-S is either an AG-VG or an Unc.
At least with the 74-CC there are a broad range of grades to collect. But much, much tougher in MS.

I agree with Elwood. The "base price" of a low grade 1874-CC dime is much lower than a similar 1878-S half.
SSSP (Shameless Self-Serving Promotion): I do have an 1874-CC dime on my website at $13,500. I don't think you could find an 1878-S half for that price.
