Hammerin Hank....the true Homerun King

Hey folks. I've got this 1954 Topps Aaron I am trying to decide on grading with PSA. I was wondering what you all think it would grade? The lines on the right hand side are print lines, not rips or tears or scratches. The bottom right edge tapers off somewhat. I thought it may be trimmed, but it isn't. I found a scan of a PSA 8 with the same exact taper. What could cause this taper? I have attached scans of my card along with the PSA 8. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!!

  • how about a bigger scan of your card?
  • That taper with the rough cut is possible, but that seems to be an ugly 8 with that taper.

However the taper and the smooth edge are not real good signs and could be a sign of trimming. Hard to say with your scan without seeing the back I am going to say a 6 unless it comes back trimmed.

that 8 looks overgraded - I am not trying to start trouble but WOW - rough cut (2 sides) and a definite slant/taper... Did you buy that or send it in yourself?

  • No, I found that scan of the PSA 8 on the internet. Mine is the raw one pictured. Here is a scan of the back if that helps....

I'm glad that seller offers a 7 day buyer back guarantee - I think unfortunately for you that card is overgraded and not the best to compare with yours - geez he wants $5,000 for that card - I guess yours is a 6 ...

  • Looking at the back I am going to say its trimmed.. The top left and right borders seem to be unevenly cut. They would be the top and bottom on the front. Could be the small scan. If I am wrong I am saying a 6
  • I also have the 1954 Topps Kaline. I know the history of these cards. They have been put away in a box for many years. My great uncle recently passed and he had an old model airplane box from the 50's packed with about 200 1954 Topps and another 200 1954 Bowman baseball and football. the cards were in stacks of 50 or so with rubber bands around them. The rubber bands were dry rotted to the outer 2 cards and had to be peeled off. Thankfully, the outer ones were commons. The only cards with any wear were the stars like Robinson, Ashburn Mays, etc., all the others were the same condition as the Aaron and Kaline, who were rookies back then, and didn't get played with or traded around much, which is good for me!
  • Oh, I wasn't comparing mine with that grade. I know mine isn't an 8, I just wanted to find one with that tapered edge, and that is the only one I could find. I was thinking a 6 myself.
  • Here is my Kaline (same print flaws on the left side)....

  • Here is a reverse scan of the PSA 8 which shows alot of similarities to mine along the tapered edge....

I would say a 6. I have a Duke Snider and Whitey Ford which both have almost the same print lines and both are straight 6s.

I think a 6. And by the way, the PSA 8 that you showed is not overgraded. Unless it is extreme, a rough cut is not disfavored when considering the grade and in many cases adds to the beauty of 50's cards. That is certainly the case here with the Aaron.

Your cards are nice, don't appear to be trimmed, and should grade.
