He won this auction at $3250.
Shortly after the auction ended, he sent this eMail:

There are two problems with his eMail. One is that he says he hasn't been able to use eBay, yet the eMail was sent through the eBay system. The other is the line "let alone a 1964 proof accented hair coin". Last month he bid on another high dollar Accented Hair I had listed, (fortunately he didn't win it), and had even asked a couple questions about it.
Thus, I logically conclude that he's lying.

The problem with this is that if you remove the flaky bidder, Bidder 10 would have got the coin for $996.89 ($10 over Bidder 9's high).
Not sure how keen they'd be in paying $3,200 in that situation. They might wonder if this passes the smell test.

I sold it to bidder 9. The direct underbidder, (10) had given up, and bought a 67UCAM I had listed, so he didn't need this one. Bidder 9 is a regular buyer who has spent a ton of money with me, so I had no problem letting him have it at his bid.

This is why I never use the second chance feature. Even if all is totally on the up and up and legit it carries the stigma of being unethical. I much rather just relist the coin and start over.

I normally don't use it either, but in this case the underbidder is a regular buyer.

90% of Bidder 9's bid activity is with you. Someone's going to think it's a shill.
This is why we can't really say someone is a shill because most of their bids are with one seller. Many bidders have their preferred sellers with whom they've had fair dealings and who has most of the stuff they are looking for.

No, he didn't. He presumably lost nearly $2,300 based on what the high bid would have been had the flake not entered the fray, and because he actually sold to the underbidder below that "new" winner.

Relisting a coin like this makes the coin look bad--like the buyer got it and didn't like it in hand. I like the second chance offer better as it comes quickly enough that the buyer knows the coin hasn't been rejected in hand. --jerry
