1966 SMS Kennedy Toned

What do you think of my new Kennedy. In hand its stunning. One question I have...Is it a real toner. It sure looks like it in hand. I am pretty good at Morgans and Peace dollars but Kennedys? I am selling most of my coins but want to start something with my son that will last a few years that is not expensive. We thought Kennedys would ne the way to go. However I have one question. On the PCGS coin facts it has 4 1966 SMS. One that says CA and another one that says DC and a plain 1966 ech for diffect prices. What does the DC and CA mean in the Decg category.

    The coin has been dipped and has retoned. The 66 SMS sets are easy to snap apart and put back together, so it's not uncommon to see sets assembled. The half you linked doesn't look bad, but it too little contrast to get a cameo designation. The coin below is a dcam, to give you an idea of what they look like. Good luck. I like your choice of projects.

    I actually had the auction on my snipe list. If it stayed below $15, I was going to take a curiosity swipe at it. This seller has listed a couple similar examples in the past. Also went for more than I was willing to pay.

    I agree with Russ - it is probably AT.
    I have looked at several thousand 66 sms sets and I have never seen one tone like that. For that matter, not even close to that. And how is it that the half is toned but the other coins show no evidence of toning. A sure sign the set was put together.

    Yes. These are the easiest colors to create and usually done by entry level coin doctors.

    I thought it may however the nickel (on his bust) is starting to show some light toning and the color on the Kennedy is not as bright as the top pic shows. It is more like the bottom picture. It really shows if you turn the coin around like a cartwheel. It is not so AT as you would call it. Leads me to beleive it is possibility NT?

    Not only that but the enlarge photo really looks to be enhanced compared to the other photo! Compare the background colors. Hardly any toning at all in that full mint set photo.

    Don't be too surprised if your Kennedy is not as toned as the enlargment makes it appear.
    I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    I just got a couple of Proof Kennedys for my set today.
    The 84-S has a very pleasing tone to it.

    Yes I received the coin. The pic makes it look real toned butr the actual coin is a very nice smooth tones Kennedy. the colors show when the coin is moved in a circle. Its very nice and does not look AT at all.
