The Downside of Dipping

This piece should never have been dipped in the first place, but it was anyway. The person failed to wash it off enough though, resulting in hideous spots that have now eaten into the surface of the coin, ruining it forever.

I could not pull that link. But I could cut and paste it in and go there. I made my own post with the link that worked but I still could not jump to that page. Too late for troubleshooting. I did see that TD and it looks knarly in a bad way.

    Cool coin.
It obviously has some stories to tell.

That probably would've been a coin I'd like to have sans dipping...

The spots were NOT caused by dipping, please stop spreading false information. Those spots were on the coin before it was dipped.

Looking at the chopmarks, I am not so sure it has been dipped, at least recently. It certainly has been abrasively cleaned. The spots look like carbon spots, not the product of any chemical alteration of the surface.

It says that it has been already cleaned and circulated. I would re-clean it with a baking soda paste to remove the spots, neutralize in acetone and leave it out in the air to retone.

How can you tell they were on the coin before?!? I'm genuinely curious

These guys are correct. That is not what a bad dip looks like. The acid in a dip is not corrosive enough to do that kind of damage.

Edited to add: A bad dip produces a golden or brown hue that is more expansive than those corrosion spots and does not eat in to the coin.

Cleaning nonwithstanding, any coin with that many chop marks i have to question the authenticity of the coin. Sorry-not for me.image

I am no expert, and don't confess to be...but with the chop marks and the harsh cleaning, I would say that coin had been stored in a metal (iron or steel) container at one time and had gotten wet. During the time it was wet corrosion caused the stains you see now...the cleaning got most of it, but the stains are so ingrained into the metal, you will never get it out...

I own a chopped Trade dollar wirh more chops then that has in a xf45 PCGS holder. I don't believe the amount of chops on that would cause me to think it is not authentic. I bought the one i have because of all the chops.

Yes, I agree this was NOT damaged not by the dip as much as other environmental exposure, possibly as Millenium stated but he is bolder than I am in making that pronouncement. I do not think that the dip helped though. Maybe a reclean and tone, possibly with vinegar or lemon juice.

Those chop are all fresh and show no sign of circulation wear.
The spots may be from a chemical test for silver content.
Better have this coin authenticated---might be another China phony.

Yum... Bent up, beat up, harshly cleaned with a brillo pad... Dipping was the least of this coins' problems IMO.
