re-activating silica gel desiccant in your oven

FreeFree Posts: 151 ✭✭✭
Does anyone know if it is totally and fully safe to re-activate silica gel desiccant in your oven? I have a few that need to be renewed (the kind I have are linked below) and I want to be sure I'm not going to contaminate our oven by 'cooking' these for a few hours at 300 degrees? Thanks.

just like shake and bake..... however it is recommended that you back a little longer at lower temperatures

CAUTION: Some desiccants are seriously damaged and can release toxic chemicals if overheated.

Remember...also this should be done in a vented electric oven!

I bake mine at 350. I only leave them in the oven for 30 minutes and they turn color and last over a month.

350 is way too hot....maybe someone can look it up but I seem to remember that around 265 is the highest you really should go with it.... longer / slower is better

It does say on the package 3 hours @ 300 degrees. But I dont follow directions very well. As soon as I notice they are dark blue I take them out.

Yeah, mine is the same, it has those directions on it. Well, I guess I'll check on it the next time a bit early to see if it's blue yet. I mainly wanted to be sure that I didn't contaminate the oven with something. Thanks.
  • The silica gel used in the dehydration packs like these are more or less harmless. My 3 year old granddaughter got ahold of one of the small ones that are included in things you buy like electronics and busted it open. We didn't know if she ate any so we called poison control and they told us that unless she ate a large amount( like half a dozen of the little packs ) it was no problem. They told us to just make her drink a glass of water so that the gel would have plenty of moisture to absorb and it would just pass through her with no harm.
