When I was in Scottsdale this past week I also dropped by a garge sale and picked them up.
The lady said that she had "no idea what they are or the value"
I said that I don't know either but would take them both for $20

Check it out

Hoard the keys.
I guess the heat (109 degrees)eliminated partial brain cells and all reasoning.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
If the former, they should have some value because they were made to be circulating counterfeits and probably did circulate.
LOL
Of course I neither condone or endorse such behavior.
<< <i> Would you please explain how you know they are fake? >>
For one thing, the eagle's have dragon heads.
1: the denticles; on these coins the go from long to short with the short ones about 5 o'clock on the obverse.
2: Miss Liberties nose is oriental and rounded not straight.
3: Edges, many times you can see where they were joined (each half made separately) and if visible it is
very obvious.
4: Mint marks are many times the wront font or style.
5: Eagles head is wrong (just does not look right and has that "Chinese look"
6: Wear, many times the obverse wear is worse than the reverse wear (they don't match)
7: weight, usually they are very underweight (from 17 - 22 grams). This can be the easiest to
spot. But, I do own a couple that are overweight and overlarge but feel right and are the most
deceptive to spot unless you measure the diameter!

<< <i>When were trade dollar fakes made? Back when they were in circulation or are they modern fakes made for the purpose of duping collectors?

Most these days are being mass produced in China. Tourists bring them back from China and many are bought from eBay sellers located in China.

I'm building a set of em (so far I own) 1875-CC, 1876-CC, 1877-CC, 1878, 1878-CC, 1878-S..
None of these have the word "Copy" & are kinda cool.
Anyone have dates 4 sale I don't have ?
Thanks to "tightbudget" I can now say I also have a 1873-CC & a 1874-CC fake
<< <i>Is this a fake???????

<< <i>did you think these were real when you bought them? were you hoping for a 'u suck' on Monday morning? Just curious. I mean why knowingly overpay for two fakes? If you didn't know, it is fine, it only cost you $20 - not a big mistake even for modest collectors. >>
I went to my mothers church members' home for the garage
sale (it was for charity) I didn't want to say that she knew they were not real soooo I thought for $20 it goes to a good thing and I get my first fake dollars'
I do not collect trade dollars. After looking at them I saw it was not real. I am used to looking for fake Morgans and these were the worst.
I thought that I would post this so other members might learn.

<< <i>If anyone has REAL versions of the 2 coins in question, or can post pics of them, it would certainly be educational for someone like me to see the differences as explained by Bob (AUandAG)!
Thanks in advance!
