email from dealer, good for a chuckle

Hello, Doug- How has it been going? It’s been 3 ½ years now since we last did business. We bought a CC dollar today that I don’t think you have. It is the 1880-CC dollar Vam-5 which is the 8 over high 7 variety Top-100 NGC MS65. Coin Values doesn’t differentiate these Vams but a regular 80-CC is listed at $1800 in MS65. This one is $1595. Let me know where your head (and money!) is at.
Enjoy your weekend.
Regards,

A quick search on Heritage puts the actual current price 65 at $1035.00, give or take a little.
I don't mind a dealer making some profit on a coin,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Coin Values as a reference, huh?

Funny how he doesn't point out that Grey Sheet Ask is $1350. Probably just an oversight, right?

By the way, Heritage sold a VAM 5 in an NGC-65 holder for $1035 (including buyer's fee) in May this year.
    When in doubt, don't.

    do what i did:

i had the same situation recently where the dealer used Coin Values pricing to get his "deal" across. I told him i already had that coin (which i did), but countered by saying: "you're an honest dealer, and i wouldn't mind giving you first crack on a couple similar coins." he said "sure!". I quickly tested him by giving him Coin Values pricing on the two in question and lowering my price quite a bit below CV pricing but still quite an uptick about Gray sheet. He quickly referenced Gray sheet pricing and what the coin was "worth". I said "gray sheet, but what about Coin Values?" as he began to stammer about, i hung up on him.

just reaffirms my experience with some dealers; selling to them, they will use whatever "proof" they need to show how little the coin is worth. when buying however, it is the CV or PCGS price guide they like to use.

Well, I'd tell the dealer, I know where your head and money is at:

    1. Where the sun don't shine......
    2. Gone up in smoke

take your road show to the next town.
