HyperionHyperion Posts: 7,485 ✭✭✭
went to the car dealership this morning and wound up talking to the receptionist for a little while...
long story short image she shows me this 1974 lincoln penny she received from a customer, it had on the obverse a little silouette (sp) facing lincoln, looks like a reasonable kennedy fascimilie...
I wish I had my camera to take a quick shot but Ill only geek out so far image

anyone ever come across something like that ? I dont think it was freehand, it looked counterstampish to me...

bizzare...

Remember getting one out of a vending machine as a kid. Had a little piece of paper with interesting tidbits about the presidents. Ah, memories .....

They also made them with the States counterstamped into them.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

I used to love collecting those when I was a kid. They were stuck to a card that listed the "odd coincidences" between Lincoln and Kennedy. If I remeber correctly there were so many of them around that you could find loose ones in your pocket change.

The cent came w/ a card with strange coincidences

    Here's a few :

    Mere Coincidence or Something Deeper?
    Consider this...

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters.
Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost a son while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both were shot behind the head.

    Here is an interesting one...
    Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy.
    Kennedy's secretary was named Lincoln.

    Both were assassinated by Southerners.
    Both were succeeded by Southerners.

    Both successors were named Johnson.
Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are made of fifteen letters.

Mr. Booth shot Lincoln in a Theatre called "Ford".
Lee Harvey Oswald, shot Kennedy in a car called "Ford" Lincoln.

Booth ran from a theater and was caught in a warehouse.
Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

    And last but not least,
A month before Lincoln was shot he was in Monroe, Maryland.
A month before Kennedy was shot he was with Marilyn Monroe.

The rest of the coincidences may be true, but this definitely is not. Marilyn died in August, 1962; JFK died November, 1963.

Counterstamped coin novelties is the one area of numismatics my wife became interested in. She has the coin you refer to as well as 20-30 other counterstamped coins. I just picked up last weekend one for her for a dollar that has a map of Indiana stamped to the right of the Lincoln bust. They are usually inexpensive when found and a neat thing for those collectors who like something different on a small budget.
