None of these were submitted to PCGS. I'm not beholden to any particular grading company, since these are not for investment/resale...

So why slab them in the first place?

Believe it or not, resale isn't the only reason to slab a coin. Protection, presentation, verification of authenticity, weeding out "problem coins", and "just because I feel like it," are all valid reasons to slab coins. Why do people slab $5 value Lincolns, Jeffersons, and Roosevelts?

I really don't get the whole "Why bother if it isn't PCGS" mentality... I understand when it comes to investment-grade material, and for those consumed with the Registry chase, but in the areas I tend to collect (Darkside and toners), one slab is as good as another. On the Darkside, with the exception of a few countries, there is no correlation between the flavor of the slab and the price received; I sell ICG, ANACS, NGC, PCGS, and occasionally even old-world PCI, all with positive results. On the common-grade, common-date Morgan toners I collect, the technical grade isn't what's going to sell the coin (if I ever sell), it's the color. For example, on a garden variety MS63 1881-S, does anyone *really* care if it's in a PCGS vs. NGC vs. ANACS vs. ICG holder?

3 and 7, maybe. 8 looks NT to me. Nice group anyway. With some of those, the assigned grade is only half the valuation weight anyway these days.

Here are the grades. For each coin I gave a summary of all of the grades posted above, and the ICG grade in bold.

In my opinion, ICG was quite conservative. Only one of the AT coins was clearly recognized as such by the folks here. I think ICG missed the mark on #2 and #6 in my opinion. I was really hoping for a 63-64 on the CC.

    1) 63, 64, 64, 61, 64, 65, 64, 63, 64, 63, 64, 63, 64, 63, 63 MS63
    2) 64, 64, 55, 61, 63, 65, 62, 62, 58, 53, 63, 62, 58, 63, 58 Questionable Toning
    3) 63, 63, 55-62, 63, 64, ??, 63, 62, 63, 63, AT, 64, 64, 64, 62 MS63
    4) 63, AT, 64, 63, AT, 65, 63, 58, 63, 64, 63, AT, 64, BB, BB Questionable Toning
    5) 63, 63, 63, 64, 63, 64, 63, 64, 63, 63, 63, 62, 63, 63, 62 MS62
    6) 64, 64, 63, 65, 64, 65, 64, 64, 63, 64, 64, 64, 64, 64, BB Questionable Toning
    7) 62, 58, 50, 53, 55, AU cleaned, 58, BB, 55, 55, BB, BB or net AU, BB, 55, BB AU55

Impossible. Any good Kool-Aid drinker would tell you that everything should be 2-3 points overgraded. image

Overall, ICG seemed conservative and honest. The consensus had #2 at a grade b/t 58 and 65, comes back in a BB!

<< <i>Overall, ICG seemed conservative and honest. >>

They are as good as anyone until you start getting into MS-65+ coins, most particularly (but not exclusively) moderns. It is their unfortunate looseness with very high-grade moderns which torpedos their entire reputation, even though for circulated and lower-grade MS classics they are as good as anyone, IMO, bar none.
