<< <i>Whoever wrote that for eBay is somewhat off on his info. The "globs" occurred because the mint mark punches were deteriorating. The S mint mark was particularly susceptable to filling, because of the shape of the letter, and had to be replaced more often. Also, to my eyes, the diagrams used appear to both be Type 2.
The type 1 mintmark sketch represents the early die state. After a short time
the mintmark became filled and later on it became globbed. The reason for this
working die failure is given in the artical. The differences in the two mintmark sketches
are as easy to see here as they are on the coins themselves.
After this artical appeared on eBay the number of 1981 type 2 sets up for auction
has dropped from 20 or 30 down to 1 or 2 --- these are type 1 also (with clear s).
The number of raw type 2 coins has dropped also. If it were not for the big price
difference between the two types it would be a nothing thing.
