One thought, would PSA be willing to let the pack be opened there and have it taped? We might be able to get some of the grading fees waved if it was made into an event. I would be in. It is a lottery type of deal so anyone thinking of making money may want to back out. I would also be down if we can only get 25.

i'd be a part of a group pack rip if we got at least 50 involved.

if steve was closer to TN, i'd volunteer to be commissioner and go to his place to crack, open, video and youtube it. however, i didn't realize he was on the north end of the state until i mapquested him. i "commissioned" an 80 topps case break shortly after the gary fiasco and i think everyone was pleased since the boxes came directly from steve. don't know how everyone would feel with the wax psa holder being cracked off-site. are the holders for packs similar in nature to the cards (ie. do they crack the same)?

    Thanks,

I'm in if we can work out the logistics.

Suggestion: Make a media event out of it by doing it at next year's National. Get all the players involved, BBCE, PSA, National reps. I bet PSA wouldn't even charge for grading.

<< <i>Any link about the Mastro box? I would like to read that. Also wasn't a hi series case unearthed a decade or so ago? >>

It looks like the Mastro auction page has been taken down. However, I did locate the Leland's follow-up auction page for the same box:

    Leland's Auction - 1952 High # Wax Box

Here's a write-up from the PSA website about the Mastro auction that contained the wax box:

Mastro Auction Preview on PSA Website

I had heard the winning bidder of the Mastro auction flipped the box because of health reasons. I found it odd though that it was resold so quickly. Anyone ever hear anything more about this? Anyone know what came of the box and packs? Were any opened? I don't think the box was broken up because I haven't come across any of these individual packs being resold.

Edited to add that I have not heard of a case being unearthed. You may be thinking of the 80 or so first series packs a grandma in Washington sold in the 1990s. There may have been another find as well because I remember seeing 10 pack cello bricks of 1952 packs at the 1996 (?) national in Anaheim. I believe the Washington find was loose packs only but I could be wrong. They may have been one in the same. Still kicking myself for not coughing up the $1500 they were asking for those packs at that time.

Sorry to pee on the picnic but everyone who's considering busting this pack needs to go into it with the full expectation that they will lose money. The chances of netting the $5k+ back on the graded card results is slim. One card will be gum stained and another will likely be wax stained. I personally haven't opened a 1952 pack but I have opened other vintage packs (1960-76) and have seen the results of many others. There's a good chance the cards will be off centered. There's also a good chance that the corners will be dinged from handling over the years. I'd be shocked if this was a high series pack, so the chances of pulling a Mantle are slim to none.

Having said that, if you go into it with the proper frame of mind, then you'll be in good shape. Have fun. Personally, it wouldn't be much fun for me unless I were cracking the pack myself.

All negative responses about this is very much appreaciated, I am thinking the anticipation of being part of this out weighs the grim reality of this idea. It seems highly unlikely we would end up making any money on this, and that would really be the only reason to do this because there simply would not be enough cards to go around for everyone to add to their collections. However I did state that I would do this and I will stand by my commitment if this gets off the ground. Thanks for all the input.
