I am so tempted to open them but haven't.......

Opening them to check the coins would be redundant.

Opening them to check the coins would be redundant.

Now, I feel really dense. Why would it be redundant?

The 1965 SMS sets were not sealed by the mint. Somebody has already checked the coins.

    Russ is correct!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Maybe the original owner found some 1964 SMS coins, got disgusted with the Mint, sealed them up, and decided just to forget the whole thing?image

(I am teasing Bochiman, trying to see how long he can hold out now.)image

Not this time, Russ....they are in the original mailing envelope (both sets in 1 envelope and marked and stamped).
Sets have NOT been opened and are only "sealed" by the mailing envelope..... image

(It was a trick post image )

I got these from my uncle last month.....I want to pass them on to my son unopened just because it is cool since they were sent opened but the original mailer hasn't been opened so no one has seen them

btw....Russ....I thought you, of almost all people on the board, would have figured there to be an angle behind my OP.....I am not dumb enough to have been on the boards this long without realizing that the sets, themselves, were sealed by the mint image

    You got it, G4driver image

Except the name and address are different image
Also, yours appears to be a box....these sets are in an envelope.
What's cool is that, while the front looks like yours to a large degree, the back has a piece of white tape sealing the flap on the back and is stamped twice from the post offices....once with July 28, 1966 and once with Aug 5, 1966. Easy to see the set has been molested yet (no tears or partially opened flap....no issues with break of the stamp or tape)

Yeah, I see that now....I was just looking at the "2" in the bottom right part of the shaded area and not the "10" in the left side.
Mine has a "2" in each place.

    G4driver....you show off image

I've been trying to find out what constitutes "First Strike" for a long time on these. I've even called PCGS and the customer rep couldnt help me. It is San Fran postmarked Aug 4 1966.
