    wow- nice group of 52s
  • I did pretty well, I picked up:

1997 Spx Promotion Marino Auto 1 of 100
1998 Pinnacle Inscriptions Pen Pals Marino / Elway 1 of 50
1999 Dress 4 Success dual Jersey Marino / Couch
    1998 Stadium Club Co-signers Marino / Leaf
    1991 Proline PPK Marino
7 1998 Playoff Milestone Autos Marino
1998 Upper Deck Legends Jersey Marino
1999 Skybox Molten Metal Patchworks three colored Jersey Card
A Steiner Official Jersey Autographed by Marino
    1997 Dolphins Police Marino
    2 Dairy Pak Marinos

    Not to bad.

Was anyone else shocked by the amount of PSA graded cards on the tables.

This from the "I don't believe in card grading" dealers! Three years ago there was little if any PSA graded cards at the show.
Looking for 1971 Topps Football PSA 8 NQ or above, and slowly working my way into the 1962 Topps Football Set. Check out my 1972 Topps Football Set 100% Complete.

I was actually shocked by the sheer dominance of pre war cards. It seemed every table had at least one T206 or Goudey on it. The funniest moment that happened to us was when we were trying to sell some cards to a guy who only had newer auto and RC stuff so we start pulling that out and he say's "I'm only buying prewar cards". I think there was about 1000 PSA 1 and 2 T206 cards there.

Man those are some killer cards. I wish I could have gone. It is in IL next year, but isn't it back in Cleveland after that?

Bought a grand total of six new Topps baseball packs, one SCD, one Tuff Stuff (both for a buck a piece at the booth) and two 100 count plastic cases. As you can tell there wasn't much at the show I really wanted to purchase. Highlight for me was meeting Stacy Keibler, what a fox!! my son did snap some photos on my cell phone, unfortunately no Stacy.

I went to the National, today, Sunday. I was a little disapointed with it. I got there at 11 am and many of the dealers had already went home, and numerous others were already packing up by noon. I went looking for 1948-55 graded Bowman football HOFers in grade 7. I was also looking for graded mid grade National Chicles. I really didnt see too much. Some dealers had higher grades, and some lower, but not alot in 7. The few that had what I was loking for were asking far too much...at least for my wallet. I think ebay has spoiled me...I kept thinking, "I know I can get that on ebay for much cheaper" There was a lot of vintage football raw...but I do not buy raw anymore.

Here is my only purchase from the National...and I love it! It found a new home above my fireplace and I think it looks great (Don't worry, I don't use my fireplace so no fire risk! LOL)

I got there on Friday just before the luncheon. I had to return home that night so I had to move quickly to see most of the tables. I did pick up 14 PSA 8 1960 Topps Baseball including B. Robinson, Ford, and Spahn. I also got a PSA 8 Dusty Rhodes 1955 topps. And I finally completed my 1955 Topps with the purchase of #166 Hank Bauer. My 1955 set is all over the place for quality. I have 90% in PSA holders, most stars in lower grade, many cards are PSA 6 to 8. The 10% not in PSA holders are basically filler cards until I can get a better one. The Bauer I bought raw is a nice 4 or slider 5. I really enjoyed just looking at the high quality vintage cards, kind of like going to a museum.

Thanks stown. Here is a small sample of the partially graded 71 football set I picked up. Over 50% graded in mostly 7-8 shape with a few 6's and 1 5. I got it for $600 total, I have the Bradshaw and Greene in 8's already. Hope I did ok I haveno idea how to value a set like that. The raw are all very nice.

I was only there Thursday. I did a whole lot more looking than buying. These two were my best pick-ups. The Wilson has an Old Mill back. The Maddox is Piedmont. I also picked up some inexpensive PSA graded Stargell cards.

I ended up buying a couple of PSA 4 T206s from Kit Young, just a couple of commons though they do exhibit great color. I do not have scans of them.

Let me tell you my take on the National...First off, i thought many of the prices were not bad...even for vintage stuff from the 50s. If you had cash , it was king and many things were neogotiable. I picked up some nice 51 Ringsides (#1 in a psa7 and #96 in a Psa 7),An outstanding 1951 Topps Magic Card that I sent to get graded, 1970 topps football vending box graded 9, Another box graded 8.5, a 1951 bowman bb set complete and other assorted cards...I heard that someone on wed bought many of the vintage sets...I was very lucky to come accross the 51 bowman set as I was just looking for a 51 mantle and the dealer pulls out a complete set from under his counter!!!!!
This is the 4th National i have been to and the previous ones were supported by Mr. Mint, and His association of loyal dealers. Most were not there from his group and the prices were reasonable this time around. I also had many fine conversations with many dealers who seemed very dedicated to their business. I dont think the huge crowds were near as much. I attended 4 days. The only sad thing was that I had to sell some stuff to Steve to fund my adicition and it was really nice to talk to him and see his vintage unopened...

I am really happy with my pick up at the National show...a beautiful 1984 Topps #101 Porfirio Altamirano. Eat your heart out boys, it is all mine and no amount of money will get it from me. This is truly the holy grail of cards!!!

Was Al Rosen at the National?? I did not notice him there on Saturday??
  • This was my first National and it was awesome. It was even better than I had pictured it in my head. I has some sweet pick ups:

1948 Leaf Hal Newhouser PSA 6
1954 Topps Ted Williams PSA 6
1963 Topps Sandy Koufax PSA 8
1966 Topps Willie Mays PSA 7
1970 Topps Willie Stargell GAI 8

Funny you mention about a guy buying all the vintage sets on Wed. On Saturday we stopped by a dealer whose name escapes me but he bought the 1969 Jackson RC that was on the boards recently that was pulled from a pack. He had a whole display case of 1960, 1967 and 1955 topps cards that were from sets he sold to the guy. He was a lawyer from Indiana. Great cards wish I had that deep of pockets. It was amazing to see hundreds of cards all set aside for one guy.

If you ignore a rat will it go away on it's own, maybe we should try. I just hope that BBCE or other raw dealers start shutting him out for giving them bad names.

  • Hi,
I had a great time at this years National. My pick ups were 1939-46 Salutation Exhibits of Ted Williams (#9 not showing) in rough condition, about 50 to 75 raw 1970 Topps football in mid grade condition for my set. about 25 to 30 1960 Fleer football to complete my set (now the upgrades begin), Grady Sizemore auto'd ball, CC Sabathia auto'd ball, Fausto Carmona auto'd ball, and my two biggest pickups were Jhonny Peralta and Victor Martinez game used bats.
My only disappointment was that BO Jackson had been pushed back on sunday and I was unable to meet him. Thankfully Tristar understood my time constraints and will be sending me my mini helmet. It just sucks that I couldn't meet him.

LOL. If Gary was at the show he must have been operating from the shadows. He did not turn up at the PSA luncheon and when Joe asked some guy in the crowd if he would like to accept Gary's certificate on Gary's behalf everybody laughed. They were, of course, laughing at Gary. He is basically persona non grata in the hobby.

Rosen skipped Cleveland, and prior to it said he would do so in SCD in a fit of pique at organizers.

As for Gary, I do not know him, but have seen pictures. Is that not punishment enough ?

    Gary,

Since it appears you are reading the boards daily, I'm still waiting for a response to this question:

How did you decide whose money you would refund from the football rip? Why did you never reply to my emails, PMs, or Paypal claims? I'm still wondering what I did/didn't do in order to make the cut?

Does anyone have a link or could post that SCD article about Rosen. I like to read about that jerk acting like a jerk. What they wouldn't cater to him and let him sit right in front of the entrance so he could belittle your collection and offer 50% of book?

This is what I heard about Mr. Mint and why he was not at the show. My brother was at table and the dealer was boosting that he had Mr. Mints table. He went on to explain that because there where two entrances Mr. Mint did not want to attend. Apparently he likes to be close to the entrance door to buy all of the good cards before anyone else gets a chance to buy it. I also heard that some of the dealers where in the parking lot buying and or directing folks to there table so they could buy their cards. I am not sure how true it is but if it is, man has card collecting turned cut throat!

Thats why i like to walk in with an old shoe box labeled 57 topps. image I was over welmed again at the National and basically filled some holes in my 66 topps and some odd ball Ryno stuff. Some observations

This was alot more people at this national compared to 2005 Chicago

    Prices were decent.

Women working at the PSA booth were hot.

The guy who ran the Topps booth was a dick. image
