Bad Bank Check-Fraud- What's Next?-Update!
We'll be scanning these checks and posting them.
1 from a Russel Harrison ( we shipped this guy today via express mail. Does anyone know how to stop an express mail? ) I shipped the coin to Houston Texas earlier today. If anyone knows the all night distribution telephone numbers there would you please let me know what it is?
Dang it all. My bank didn't even call me. Got this in the mail today and have been charged back. I'll be posting pictures of the coins if we cannot intercept the package.

<< <i>Your only hope is the Postal Inspectors who could put a hold on the delivery. I have no idea if they are available over the weekend. I would sure be dialing numbers to find out.

Thanks, believe me we're on it. Police will be here shortly as well.

<< <i>Go to the post office first thing in the morning. They have a form to request a package to be returned to the shipper. After you fill it out, have them fax it to the receiving post office. I would then go here and call the post office which delivers to the zip code you shipped it to and make them aware you have filled out a package return form. It is not a guaranteed service, but I would think due to the circumstances, they ahould be able to intercept delivery. They also return the package to you the same way it was shipped. You are supposed to leave a deposit with the post office for the return postage, but the one time I have used the service, I was not charged. >>
Be on the lookout for an 1850 Double Eagle
Charlotte Cnty Sheriffs were just here and basically will be doing nothing. Someone from economic crimes unit will call me in the next 2 weeks. I thought it would be pretty simple for them to coordinate with the post office to be there when the package is delivered and just arrest the guy but they say "it's a lot more invoved than that".
Really?
I'm pissed off at myself for not triple checking which I usually do. This could have been avoided. Meanwhile we're out a couple thousand dollars. I am not a teletype dealer, If any of you guys are on the tape would you please report these as stolen for me. I'll be happy to furnish you with the police report number.
I am REALLY annoyed that my bank didn't call. They'll lose a client on monday.

They just debit you and if you don't catch it early (online) you get the bad news in the mail a week or so later. Crazy stuff.
Hope this works out ok.

Unfortunatly, the fax is not listed. They open at 7:30 a.m. so you can try calling them.
The Post Office may be able to stop the delivery if you file a mail fraud case. If there's time?
I was lucky one time when I sent an Express package to a guy who had used a stolen credit card. It seems the carrier was sharp enough not to deliver it and it was returned to me. Seems the guy had been doing a lot of that and the word must have been out.
I sure it works out and you get the coins back.

Contact the delivery unit by phone of the Post Office the package was addressed to early tomorrow morning. Explain all the pertinent information.
By the way-why are you blaming the Post Office for this? I ask because I used to work with Express mail before I retired four years ago.
I hope that you get the delivery stopped on this coin. In the past, I have taken checks like this to the bank and asked the teller to verify it before I deposit it. With the routing number and account number (numbers on the bottom of the check), they should be able to do this. With all of the fraudulent bank checks and money orders out there now, I verify them all (but I don't do the volume of business that you do).
When shopping for a new bank, I would ask them if they could provide that type of service for you.
Keep us posted. I hope the Post Office catches they guy (he sent the fraudulent check through the mail so that is mail fraud) they take this seriously.
I hope you get your coin back and the guy rots in #$%^!!!!!
If the check crosses state lines, then it's much more involved to get the police in another state to respond. It's not just a call. It actualy takes legal action. Just like when non-paying child support, it takes a long time to get it processed through the courts to be able to get this done.
They will call me when they locate the package. We're keeping our fingers crossed.
Remember I told you all that we got two bad items in one week? Well, maybe more than that now. Stay tuned.
What really gets me is that my bank doesn't even call to advise of a fraudulent check. That I had to get it in the mail.

Fortunately it's not a lot of money. Imagine if it was 100K or more.
But it is the point isn't it?
On a side note, I have now received TWO bank of america checks with similar id numbers from 2 different people. I'll be posting them after monday. One has already been returned and I'm going to bring the other one into Bank of America to see if they'll tell me anything before I deposit it. Wayne, do you recall what bank that gang was using for their checks?

We're pretty well known and duke it out with everyone on the net. I personally field quite a few calls and emails per day. Plus I have an ebay store which is very very tiny in terms of importance but is there nevertheless..
The one fellow with the fraud bank check claims to have been referred to me by a client. As conservative as I am with regards to checks, shipping, etc I did NOT ask who the client was who referred him. I should have done so. Plus we exchanged emails back and forth and never spoke on the phone ( another mistake on my part ) The other 2 checks, one which has already been rejected and the other sitting here on my desk which is suspect appear just like any other random order which we receive often enough to not give them more than a second glance. Have to re-evaluate that second glance now.
Thank you for the good wishes.

White collar crime does pay, because the police could care less in most cases (or they don't understand the complexities of the crime), or lack the energy to do anything more than oogle the waitresses at the Dunkin doughnuts.
I think that if you were so inclined, you could go fly to the city where the crime occured (or call first to see if a detective will take your case) and provide evidence to the police of the fraudulant cashiers check and transaction. For the police, it would be as simple as going to the Post office to see who is registered at the P.O. box you sent the coin to, then going to his house and making an arrest.

1) I hope so and if that happens we'll be grateful.
2) Shows how little that law enforcement cares about fraudulent checks and the criminals that victimize us.
Reminder: I will post copies of the Bank of America checks I recieved with the names and addresses of the "people" who sent me these checks on monday. I will be happy to share this information with anyone who wants it. Be forewarned, there is something going on out there with these lowlifes taking advantage of us. I'm feel certain this isn't isolated to just us.

I am not sure it is worth the time or effort depending on the volume you do. We recommend certain banks that give you a check scanner to deposit and clear the check much faster. You will also know if it is bad much faster as the processing time is cut way down.

Interesting how the ABA on one of these checks is accurate and no mention of it being counterfeit. One that was just returned has a very similar signature style to another one I just received. The one that was returned thus far was for "unauthorized signature".
Even a 10 business day holding period is NOT sufficient I am told now. Wow!
Arco, the police had zero interest whatsoever.

Interesting . I spoke to a different bank about the possibilities of jumping ship months ago ( unrelated reasons for jumping ship, just looking for a better deal). He asked me if I had the ability to scan checks at the office and deposit the checks via computer. My answer was no to that and the more I think about it now the more it scares me. The crooks already have a plan to deal with that ya think?
So what's the solution(s) to this? How do we in the profession as well as y'all who are weekend warriors avoid getting burned and not alienate good people who are simply interfacing with us to do the business of coin collecting??
Again think of my position. In 16 years since leaving the firm in Dallas, I have not had a single occurence like this one and suddenly I get hit 3 times in a 2 week period. I don't want to alienate anyone who wants to do business with us but at the same time I need to .....er....do business! The track record of the past 16 years has been great. Is it now a whole new world all of a sudden that requires big changes to how we accept payment or just little tweaks?
I'm open to suggestions
