NGC tough on ASE's
I was under the impression that NGC handed out 70's like candy.
Bought 50 from the Slaughter House, narrowed it down to 10 gems.
These things are flawless, WTF. So do I resubmit and play the fee game?
Why don't TPG's come out and say it, the more you spend on fee's, the better the grades.
I called NGC today and asked for the grades. Eight 69's and two 68's. The only thing worse than the grades would be
milk spotted ASE's
Took a real butt fu##ing on that deal.
The pic below was one of them, flawless.

My uncirc collection is 69 and now I have to buy another one or have one of my bullion pieces graded.

I'm going ape shat here. If the coin is spotless, slab it 70, period.
Maybe I'll slab em myself. 70's are the easiest to grade, if there is nothing to knock it down, it's a no brainer.
How much time do they spend examining coins 5 seconds? I spent hours going through 50.
Guess I'll write NGC a letter, and ask for a definition of 70.
Perhaps publically saying you received a BFing by them might not help in the regrading category by NGC though. Maybe try another TPGer?

other than that, she is very purdy.
Sure I'm upset. I did my homework, scrutinized every coin, 40 didn't meet my standards, and the 10 left were spotless.
What does it take to get back 70's? If this coin isn't a 70, show me one that is.
I've heard that before, ahh yes the OJ dream team. "If it doesn't fit you must acquit".
So what you are saying is get in the submittal game?
If you were old and blind like me you would do better.
I sent in 25 without looking at them and recieved 9 70's and 16 69's
Maybe they had pity on me.
I looked at them afterwards and the 70's were pretty nice.
What is the "SLAUGHTER HOUSE"?
Rookie Joe
Thanks for sharing, just what I wanted to here. The slaughter house is the Mint, and we are the lambs.
Box of 20
PF70 knows whats up.

Thanks for the clarification.
They have been leading me along for a couple of years.

No, you don't.
Looks like about 20% are 70's, A couple weeks ago it was over 25% I believe!

Edited to add thats a very pretty coin you have there....................robbed...
First I examine the specimen with the unaided eye, and tilt the coin in the light, making it cartwheel.
Then I break out my 2x glass, (4" dia.) lastly I go over it with a 5x loupe.
I spent at least 20 minutes going over each of the 10 finalists.
At 20%, 2 should have received 70. Guess my percentage was 0%.
try an 8x and see if you can see anyting different.
i'd be upset too.

i feel your pain, i've always done good with NGC, my last submission i sent 30 coins (2007-w) without inspecting any got 10 ms70 20 ms69.
Had a very bad experience with PCGS on my first spouse coins, sent 69 coins (also without inspecting any) received only 1 70...im still pissed off about this...so i know how you are feel
I don't own an 8X, 7X is the largest I have.
Do you really need more than a 5X, for an ASE?
If there is a ding on an ASE, my naked eye can spot it.

I could understand this if you were judging the Miss America contest.....
Your the second one that chimed in that didn't screen. WTF
Maybe next time I'll let my 2 year old nephew pick em.
Good one I needed a laugh.
Smart move, but I convinced myself these were a lock.
It really makes more sense to buy em graded, let someone else take the bath.
Still a beautiful coin.

<< <i>do I see a pin head size mark at the top of the eagles head?
No, you don't. >>
Well, what the hell... I see what the poster is talking about myself, and also what looks like a frost break or some kind of blem in the field above the D in the IGWT legend in both photos.
I've sorted through 150 of these and selected five for submission to PCGS. (Grades not back yet.) In the process I could see some variance in the luster on these coins, with some having relatively dull faces or even just part of the obverse. Should I want one of those if I buy a coin in a 70 holder?
Are there faint light spots on the obverse between the "D" in God and the "Y" in Liberty?
On the reverse, I also see what appears to be a dark spot on the Eagle's wing to the left of the scroll that says "UNUM".

I submitted 7 first spouses to PCGS and got all 69s.

So it does pay to screen em, good for you.
<< <i>Same ASE larger pics, I see nothng, you????????????

On the reverse of the pictured coin to the left and up a bit from the W mintmark and almost immediatlty above the N in FINE, there are two small spots that if they are on the coin would prevent it from achieving the MS70 grade. aThere is also a similar spot in the lower row of stars as well as between the right wing and the eagles neck. I had a 2005 Proof that in my eye was flawless. I submitted it for a presidential review and a tiny spot (pinpoint tiny) was flagged as the reason the coin did not get the PF70 grade.
All the TPG can be incredibly picking with regard to 70's!

<< <i>I got grades back today on the five of 150 that I sent in to PCGS.

Sure does....I got the results back from the 4 I sent in to PCGS and I got (2) MS70 and (2) MS69. That's out of roughly 8 or 10 I screened before sending in.
