1972 Sunoco Stamps (NFL), Anyone Old Enough to Remember Getting These?

image

This is not mine, stolen from a current ebay auction. I remember my dad bringing these home in the fall of 1972. Really good memories to me. Can anyone explain what's going on with the PSA holder / sleeve? Is a sleeve the size of the holder slabbed between the two plastics? I've seen the sleeves within the "insert space", but not beyond it.

Oh yes I remember those. In fact I just came across the ones I had as a kid. Also, what about the Hockey stamps of the same type. I think I got my hockey as giveaways at a grocery store. I have a lot of the hockey but only a handful of the football.

  • I love these stamps-I was living in Newport RI when they came out and I remember pestering my dad about him needing to get gas so I can get the stamps. I still have the collector album and some loose stamps. It would be cool to collect the whole set. I just bought a Roger Staubach PSA 8-looking forward to receiving it!

    Love the stamps!
They look way better than those ugly airbrushed Topps cards of the era.

Have a complete set all in raw form and they are spectacular ...

A really cool and gorgeous set.

My interest in this set revives, sporadically. I had @ 75-80 loose ones in the late 70's I got from a friend of mine. Unfortunately, I left them in my jacket pocket, the jacket got washed and...well, you know.

Cut to the early 90's, when I picked up a few singles of players I liked (Jim Marshall, Paul Warfield) and a couple of opened, but still undetached and complete 9 stamp panels featuring Charlie Joiner.

Cut again to early 2006 when I got a couple of complete team sheets on eBay (which are especially cool, since they have a few extra players, almost like an update set, that aren't in the regular set.) and then finally to a few months ago when I got the basic album and around 20 books, which I had a blast opening.

Yes, I collected them also. I had the album for quite a long time and seems like it got misplaced in one of my many moves during adulthood.

i just picked up a few sheets of these. i've not opened them yet. i have 4 strips and each has a team cover on them. were these issued by team or when i open one that has the cowboys team on front will it have players other than cowboys? the 4 strips i have are cowboys, eagles, jets and dolphins.

    Thanks,
