I WILL NOT Be Buying Any More Silver Eagles
I have five proof 20th anniversary silver Eagles I just took out to look at and wouldn't you know it, milk spots appearing around the outside rim on all of them. Pathetic. Now these are pretty much worthless. I have a PR70 silver reverse proof and I will be keeping a sharp eye on that one. Once the milk spotting begins I will be unloading it faster than a machine gun. The Mint needs to get this under control. Totally ridiculous.

Golddigger....ignore this troublemaker above....I will pay you face value for the coin when you unload it
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

The night of the 12th. I know because it was a full moon and I saw Colonel Mustard under the maple tree talking to Miss Scarlet, who happened to have a candlestick in her hand

BM, you make "troublemaker" sound so negative.
Maybe it's a chemical reaction with the PCGS plastic?
I unloaded all my spotted eagles a few months ago, including the 20th anniv. set.
I'd say 3-4 weeks ago. Once they start its all over.
i've seen some with brown spotting (maybe from brown cows) some that were "flawless" a few months ago, it's sad as it is a very purdy coin.
and a fair number of carbon specks.

My dumb question: Do they spot because of the method of manufacture/storage or what causes the spots???

I had a complete set in an album and several of them started to spot so I sold my set. Has nothing to do with them being slabbed

take a bullion round and put plastic around it to make it seem
more desirable, only to see them go bad!
delicious ending to a barnum and bailey plan.

Hey...if I could get the coin for face value, then it was worth it
(you're a good guy, Scioto, but all's fair in going after a SAE in PR70

Is there anyway to remove these " milkspots" ? Anyway at all ? How about NCS?

Put em up on eBay; maybe you could convince some rookie that its the RARE "spotted owl" variety.
Unless someone can prove that the holder caused the spotting can someone please explain why PCGS should have any liability in this if the coin was spot-free when graded and holdered?

Did you sell them for $3 over "spot"?

<< <i>So why does this problem not happen with any of the silver commems that are issued? It seems that the spotting problem is exclusively reserved for eagles, so what's the difference? >>
I have wondered that as well, but I'd guess with the sheer volume of ASE's over commems that the planchets are treated differently or more likely with a little less care.

<< <i>Grade guarantee. Have you asked PCGS if they will buy back the coin? >>
No I did not, but I'll have to look into it.
I am careful not too invest too much money in the coins and have usually made money on more modern releases and kept a couple for my collection. Then I use the money I made to purchase the years I don't have. So overall, my ASE Proof collection is small (but growing) and mostly free. I really worry about spots since I am collecting all 70s and some are worth quite a bit of money. They are all in my bank deposit box and I used a foodsaver sealer to suck out all the air. My hope is that will protect them of external temp and all that.
I love these coins and the design but really do hate the concern of milk spots. I figure if I keep my set in good shape it will be worth even more since Milk spotting is taking out some of the population. However, I could be hosed just as easily lol. Now I have to go check out my coins for my own peace of mind lol.
Sorry to hear about the spotting on yours. Have you tried to vacuum sealing them to see if that helps?

Silver Eagles are 99% silver and Comm's are 90%.
If I understand this. The rinse that is said to be the cause, was before the strike and is part of the coin not just on the surface. It's my opinion that a change in holder will sometimes activate the problem.
Once the mint capsule is opened the coin gets hit full force with the temp. and humidity of the air at the time. I feel this can start the process.
<< <i>What's crazy to me is that the 64 Kennedy half in proof can have the same problem and it's 90%.
>>
Many Franklins, both proof and MS, have spotting problems. Not sure if these problems are related to the SAE spotting issue.
