Interesting Drug Store Find

I came to work as usual this morning, and one of the cashiers in the store wanted to show me something she recieved from a customer. She opened up a paper towel and in it were 4 silver dollars. 3 Morgans and 1 Peace. The Morgan dates were a 1878, a 1899 o, and another that I cant recall. The Peace was 1924. She told me that an older man came and wanted to buy cigarettes, but did not have enough money, so he gave her four of these. She knew I collected coins, so she held on to them and put $4 into the register.

Isnt that amazing that someone would spend those today when the silver value is SO much more?

My Dad runs a Full service gas station in the small town we live. (yeah, Full service, you remember don't you, where the greasy guy comes out of the shop and pumps the gas for you?) Anyways, this happens with 90% silver halfs and quarters frequently. No silver dollars yet. Some people just have NO clue what this stuff (silver money) is. It befuttles me.

Befuddles? Why? The public doesn't get silver halves in change, much less a dollar coin of any metallic content. Why would a normal person keep up with which coins are silver?

True, and if under 40, the norms aren't likely to even be aware that money was ever made of something of value in the first place.

Glad to hear it was for cigarettes. Can't tax those idiots enough. (I know a lot of you guys smoke; feel free to take it personally.) Now if it was some elderly person who was desperate to pay for his/her meds, that would be truly sad.

The hospital gift store at work gets a lot of elderly customers-- so far, in change from there, I've gotten a silver Roosie and a 37-D buffalo nickel.

very nice haul....my brother worked at an OTB in NYC and people would buy betting tickets with all types of old coins/currency. when you're desperate, you're desperate!!!!

I can understand where you are coming from on this, but I am beginning to worry about it. We are now beginning to count on that tax money more and ore and expecting it to carry so many programs that if the number of smokers ever does make a serious decline we are suddenly going to have a lot of programs without funding and are they going to end those programs? No no no. Instead it will mean a sudden large tax increase for all the rest of us as well. So remember all those taxes will eventually come back around and be applied to all of us.

Secondly I think it is somewhat hypocritical of the government to claim that these increased taxes will help reduce the number of smokers and then phase in the tax gradually so as to not cause the smokers too much pain. If you REALLY wanted to reduce the number of smokers you hit them with the full tax immediately. By phasing it in you keep giving them little shots and gradually increase their tolerance for the higher price so as to assure that few smokers actually stop. On the one hand you are sticking it to them and on the other hand taking steps to make sure they DON'T stop.

That's standard MO for any taxes. The thieves in DC have been doing it for decades. We're all frogs in a pot of water.

Writersblock - I agree with you. Wish the tax went to solve the problem or the indirect problem at least. OUr insurance premiums and medical costs are higher, in part, to subsidize others' reckless health choices. The revenue should not hit the general fund in the state but go to assist related programs. That way, if smoking does subside, the declining revenues scale down with the problem. No dependence on the money for unrelated activities.

What's even better that if he comes back to pay with more of these, at least NJ cigs are more expensive than most places so you get more silver per pack!

I don't know you, but we have a common friend who says you are a good guy. That being said, I don't believe giving the woman a $26 profit is what I was hinting towards. That shouldn't even play a part in it. Giving her a FAIR, not even top dollar, but FAIR offer is what I was talking about.

If the woman was a member her and posted her that she had sold them at her local coin shop, MANY of the members would be telling her that the dealer was scum and she had been ripped off.

But it is okay for a collector to take advantage of the uneducated public...

Well, what is a fair price for circulated common dollars? Particularly when the buyer isn't a high volume bullion dealer, the quantity is only four pieces, and the price of silver is as volatile as it's been recently? His offer of $7.50 might be a little low, but it isn't stupidly low under these circumstances. Most storefront dealers are paying about a dollar more right now.

Wow someone has issues. Just so you know, all of the coins were well worn. The highest grade one was probably a XF 40. The lowest was around a F15.

Go away? Why? Because you don't want to provide your opinion in response to my question about what would be a fair price under these circumstances? Maybe you need clarification. I think that if somebody who is not plugged in to the bullion market, (IE: doesn't have the contacts to move the stuff quickly), and is picking up only a few pieces in a volatile market, it makes perfect sense that they would not be able to pay absolute top dollar.

Edited to add: And that applies whether it's a dealer or a collector.

Now, if the seller has a buttload of junk silver and the buyer can move it quickly the purchase can be made on much tighter margins.

So I don't deal in Kennedys. So does that make it ok for me to offer a low-ball offer on some collection that may come my way? Or perhaps I should offer $400 for some circ $20 libs because I don't want them. Please....

I believe that most of the members here have a clue as to the bullion value of a silver dollar. In fact the spot price of silver and gold are posted on the PCGS home page.

But enough. Let it go. I have just made a decision not to post here. I don't believe my opinion, or knowledge, will be missed here. It will remain SNAFU, TARFU, or FUBAR. Take your choice.
