Got Ike grades!
I had previously posted about some problems i had with my Ike grading sent off to NGC. Well I took the advice about the breaks in luster on the chin and forehead and i did a bit better on this submission.
2-1971 ms 65
3- 1972D ms 66
Now that i think i know how to grade them I will be sending the rest of these to Pcgs....
I always go to the banks to try to find silver kennedy's. ON the day i got these ikes, the bank told me they didn't have any rolls of kennedys and then hesitated. the teller then said we have these six rolls of Ikes. I said, well ok, i'll take them. When i got them home. I knew some of them were as good as the ones i had bought at Heritage and ebay in ms -65 and ms-66 holders. AFter reviewing the rolls I believe i should have at least 10 or 15 more submissions, one of which is a 1972 type 2 all of which i will be sending to pcgs.( which seems to rate higher sale prices). I have noticed that prices of most ms ikes have dropped in the past couple of years. So i will probably hold on to these until I think that Ikes are selling for what they should considering their rarity in this condition.
I LIKE IKES!!!

Now I need to ask, in your post are you intending to say you got two 1971's in 65 and three 1972-D's in 66? If so, great score!
Post a pic of your T2, I know I'd be interested in seeing it.

Get ready, however, Ikes at PCGS are a step above...
It would be interesteing to see your 5 NGC submissions re-graded raw at PCGS.

I agree since I have heard that both of them are tough on IKE's. Some prefer PCGS as they bring a higher market price yet others submit to NGC in the hopes of getting them crossed and sometimes even upgraded at PCGS!
All in all, the OP scored very nicely and from bank coins no less! These are usually sent to the bank because nobody knows what worth they have. In this case, the coins had to have been set aside for collecting or hoarding reasons especially given the grades! These were probably an inheritance where the inheritee had no idea of the grades!
Some people have all the friggin luck!

If you agree with the grades....Send them to PCGS for an economy cross-over @ $18 a pop.
It'll cost you a little over $100. All you need is one of them to cross to pay for the submission.
However!!....Make SURE that you strongly agree with the grade!....NO sliders!
I went 0 for 10 on my first try

Although i now think I can tell the diff between au and ms as per a previous post here...... HOw in the H.... would I be able to tell the difference on an ms 65 or ms 66 ike from Ngc, grading up a half step to Pcgs? Is there a particular place on the ike to look or is it all eye appeal, or something else entirely?
I've owned many Ikes in NGC and PCGS holders, let alone raw. Certainly no where near the amount some of the other guys own, or have owned. Luster is very important on an Ike, as well as marks. There's a lot of real estate on these coins due to the somewhat basic obverse design compared to overall size. Marks tend to really stand out. From my experience, NGC grades Ikes overall about 1/2 - 1 point higher than PCGS. Certainly not always, but that's been my personnal experience and observation over the years in general. I think they were closer in years gone by, but PCGS seems to be a little more stringent in the last 2 years.
To make a MS66 Ike by NGC is a whole lot easier than PCGS in my opinion. I think that NGC is a more forgiving on the luster and even more so on the marks. Take your 72D's for example. PCGS has graded almost twice as many as NGC, yet has given slightly less MS66 grades out compared to NGC. PCGS's MS65 count is 50% higher than NGC's. You really need smooth clean surfaces on all the focal areas of the coin. PCGS is much bigger on that than NGC in my opinion. You'll get away with a scratch in wings of the eagle on the reverse much more readily than dings in the obverse hair or fields or any small scratches on the cheek.
I also cracked out NGC Ikes when I was becoming familiar with the grading criteria at both companies. I had MANY an Ike that were in MS66 NGC holders come back in MS64 or MS65 PCGS holders - again, part of my learning process. As I learned, I was able to crack-n-cross at the same grade with a substantially higher success rate.
Now, make no mistake, NGC certainly has some very correctly graded Ikes, and PCGS certainly has some overgraded Ikes - had and have some of both. I'm just giving you my personal experiences from some prior hard knocks. Learning to grade a coin despite the plastic can be a long row to hoe for some people - and expensive. Most Ikes I submit for grading now I can hit within a point or right on by my own knowledge at PCGS because I know fairly well what they expect.
As odd as this sounds, I sometimes look at a coin upside down on purpose. I feel like I'm more objective that way; my brain isn't able to cloud what my eyes are seeing because it is not registering what I want to see.
Decide How much of a committment you are will to make (or spend) to learn the Ike grading game at the TPG's, and be patient. Finding Ikes that certify in a high grade at PCGS not only can be tough, but IS tough. I think the only way to learn this type of stuff sometimes is to jump in, but there is a right and wrong way to go about it. Do some homework, check the population reports for some ideas. Study people's pictures in the registries of NGC and PCGS, or Heritage auctions's, etc. Buy slabbed coins at fair prices to learn from so you can at least break even if no longer want it.
Sorry, this became WAY longer than what it should have been!
I would only add that PCGS seems stingy on toned Ikes, as if the toning MIGHT be hiding tiny defects, while NGC seems to grade toned Ikes more generously if anything. Just my experience. Rob
