What's the best method when cleaning with mineral oil?

I'm looking at soaking a coin in mineral oil. I have a MS64 coin with some black spots that I'm told look like they have an irregular shape to be carbon. I was told cleaning with mineral oil for a long period of time might be the best way to clean it, if indeed it isn't carbon. I'm willing to try it but am not familiar with the process involved with cleaning with mineral oil.

1. Do you think these spots might be something other than carbon?
2. If so, what are the steps involved when cleaning with mineral oil?
3. If it is carbon what can I do to remove the carbon?

Thanks,

Steve

That looks like a liquid splashed on it. Is that what it looks like to you?

It kind of does. One fellow on the board said that "working dies were often coated with machine oils to reduce the wear and tear on the metals and machinery and thus many coins were "born" with oils on their surfaces."

He thought the spots may be machine oil. What do you think?
  • I have several Peace dollars that look like that. It is not a carbon spot and I think it looks OK as is.

The guys that could rework that coin, will not give it away and if there is a lot of money at stake, it becomes fraud when someone trys to sell it.

I would grade what I see as a less than a 64 so it is not worth the time to alter it.

The group that could raise havoc with the coin industry are skilled watchmakers.

Peace dollars are so pretty and soon common dates will regress to the price of silver.

I don't think it's oil. It looks like it's dried.

Do you think soaking it in mineral oil may help?

The spots have a similar shape that many Peace$ have that are thought from the rinse at the mint. Your's just appear to be darker imo.
The spots I'm thinking of as far as I know will not come off. I always called them milk spots, but as I said yours are just darker. I would be more concerned with what appear to be print lines on the top of the coin. My advice, don't boink with the coin and find another one you do like. Then sell this one.
