I can't do just a box of 20. I feel too much like a little kid in a candy shoppe.

I might be able to figure out 20 boxes of 20.

1796 C-1 no pole half cent, MS65RB, ex: Eliasberg

The Abbey cent is actually a possibility to own as it will be up for public sale in Walter Husak's fantastic large cent sale by Heritage at the February 2008 Long Beach Signature Sale. I predict this sale will surpass all others.

    Hey oreville,

Actually, I had Lasik surgery seven and a half years ago, and the results were amazing. Just two minutes of treatment and I've been 20-20 ever since.

The flip side though, was with glasses, I could take off the glasses and bring coins right up to my face and see them in crystal clear sharpness. Now I need to keep them at more of a normal distance and use a loop if I want to see minute details.

In any case, computers, scanners and digital cameras allow the study of small coins (or any coin) beyond what I could have done with my eyes alone.

Take for example the half disme. I can really appreciate the fine detail and the quality of the strike when I view it like this:

However at life size, with the naked eye, it looks like this:

At this size, holding the coin in hand, you can really appreciate the luster and the rainbow album toning, but you don't start counting dentils!

I'd kick Andy in the shins and run away with his Box of 20.

Actually, just to make the sharp pain go away, I'd chuck the 1921 Saint back at him and get the unique GW Pt Birch Cent instead.

    Sorry Andy!

the first 20 liberty half eagles minted, one of each date from each
mint, until i hit 20, in MS.

so start with 1839, all mints, etc...
  • Cardinal... Two things. First, I'm in the exact same as you with the Lasik surgery. I use glasses to watch tv and drive. My close vision is great for reading, computer work, and coins so I've not had the surgery.

Second, I totally agree that small coins are best appreciated on a computer screen and that's why good imaging is so important now in this hobby.

The more I see your 1792 half disme the more I am impressed. Can't wait to ANA to see in in person. Again thanks for sharing.

Something like an 1846 half dime does little for me so I'd probably really like 2 boxes of 20; one for the series that I collect and a second for coins that have investment potential.
