is this a counterfeit gold 2 1/2 indian? big pics

fishteethfishteeth Posts: 2,267 ✭✭✭✭✭
I Picked up this indian for below melt from a local dealer. He is not an expert on gold, or much else, but he felt it was a
counterfeit because of the raised ridge that goes around the coin about just inside the rim. I have looked at other real gold and have noticed similar raised ridges. The coin has very good detail and does not look like some other counterfeits I have seen.
befor I deface this coin I thought I would get some opinions

I see no red flags, but I wouldn't be convinced unless the weight checks out.

Looks real to me. According to an old ANACS counterfeit detection guide, 75% of fake Indian gold has tooling marks on the Indian's neck behind the braid. This one just has die flow lines. The stars have good definition. The ridge you mention is not abnormal for this issue.

When I looked at the coin I really felt it was real. Just didn't look like any fakes I have looked at. But the dealer said the rim was a give away, but as you guys have said this shows up on real ones.

Weight does check out. May not have been a bad 70 dollar pickup

    thanks

Yours looks genuine to me. I've seen a few fakes of this series and from the photos there is nothing that indicates it's a fake to me.

Nice pick up for $70. image

Looks genuine to me. The funky wear in the fields just inside where the rim would be on a normal coin is normal on 1914-D and 1925-D $2-1/2's.

I suspect that the Mint continued to upset the rims of the planchets even though the dies did not have rims on them, simply because nobody told them not to, and the upset rims hit the dies here first and caused exaggerated die wear right there. Just a theory.

I agree, the raised edge is the result of die erosion

Another score for fishteeth! That is a heavily counterfeited date/mm quarter eagle. Looks okay though. You can also check the reeding for irregularities as sometimes found on the fakes.

    Hello,
I seem to remember another post when it was mentioned that this could be caused by the coin being held in some sort of jewelry. Could be wrong, I can't find the thread.
