Researching half dollar Walker prices from the last 2-3 years , surprised to see Walkers down quite a bit . Have these coins been following the Morgans or Silver down ?

I have a 1944-S ms66. It seems the price is not where it used to be in 2004. I wonder when they will start rising again?

Exactly. The populations for highly graded Walkers have risen over the past few years. There are many rolls of BU Walkers that have surfaced over this period.

Interesting you mentioned that. I remember a dealer trying to push a PCGS MS-66 1946 Walker on me back in late '04. It was a very attractive piece, but the $800 price tag made me balk. He did explain that it was a 'low pop' date in that condition. I figured with a 12 million plus mintage that more MS-66's would come out of the woodwork. Sure enough, they did. I've seen them running under $400 now.

The population game can be deadly to your wallet if all you are after is a magic number...

During part of 1980 (in the pre-slab era), common-date, average BU Walkers were fetching as high as $200 per coin, or about $500 each in today's dollars. I wonder if we'll ever see prices like that again.

The 1916-23 dates in original high VF and higher through AU are tough. I am excluding UNCS only because MS63 and higher examples seem to be offered at auction with some frequency. I think the values of these dates have been steady but I do not think the grey sheet reflects the difficulty factor in locating these in VF-AU. Yes there is a difference in the skirt lines and how these are graded but it also seems that the more liberal grading for these dates is reflected in the grey sheet as well. How often do you see a 1923-s that is a real AU50 COIN? Or a 1919-D?

As for the dates 1923-1940 and 1941-1947, some dates remain under appreciated and afew others have been hyped because they are easy to promote. I like the 1935-D in 64 and higher. I seems that there is a following for the 1938-D, but that date is not as rare as billed. Actually, the 1938 in 66 is probably as tough as the 1938-D in 66.

As for 1941-47, the 1946 is tough in 66 and higher and seems to be underappreciated as well. Philly coins in this series get little respect and this seems to be the way it is in other series as well.

I doubt that the highs of the late 1980s will be hit any time soon, especially if one factors the value of the dollar. Just some thoughts from the cheap seats...

Several years ago one of the largest wholesalers began a massive promotion of Walkers in the short set dates. The promotion was very large in size so the need for the coins, especially in the mint state grades, drove the prices up dramatically. Since then the promotion orders have ceased and the prices on those once needed coins have corrected to levels they were at before the promotion.

Good point on promotions being responsible for a significant number of price increases. Many times it's hard to tell what's real and what isn't.

During part of 1980 (in the pre-slab era), common-date, average BU Walkers were fetching as high as $200 per coin, or about $500 each in today's dollars. I wonder if we'll ever see prices like that again.

I was watching the market in early 1980 and never recall BU walkers at $200 per coin. If anything I think many of them got melted for silver value at $20-25 per coin. Certainly many BU silver dollars got melted. So why would the walkers have been worth 8X silver value and escaped the melting pots? Anyone got a 1980 Red Book?

If you factor in 1980 dollars, then gold should be at around $2000 today. Yet at $650/oz, most think gold has already peaked.

"The 1916-23 dates in original high VF and higher through AU are tough."
Right on coinkat. I have studied this series for decades. There is a real dichotomy between the early dates and later dates. The later dates have been and always will be common, with the exception of some characteristics like fully struck branch mint issues, esoteric grades like ms68, or pedigrees like Jack Lee. No real reason to own them in grades above ms 64 or 65, as the relative value really isn't there.
The early dates are another matter entirely. I have talked to guys that were building sets back in the 1950's, and they had trouble finding the 1919's and 1921's back then, along with the 17-S obv, 20-D, and 23-S. And the pops on those have really not increased, as there apparently have been no hoards of these early dates materialize. Demand however has increased. The retail prices charged, along with auction results, has demonstrated this.

No one has mentioned the Omaha Bank Hoard. Those 2000 rolls (rumored quantity) of mostly gem quality coins have depressed prices in many series. I believe they are all post 1933-dated rolls in various denominations.

Walkers peaked several months after the early 1980 silver melt frenzy. It's possible that the melting of large numbers of BU coins contributed to the speculation that the remaining uncirculated Walkers would be scarce. If you have access to the greysheets for late April and early May 1980, you'll see what I mean.

I have a 1981 Red Book, which I think came out in mid-1980. It shows no less than $60 for any Walker in MS60, and no less than $200 for any Walker in MS65. Many were higher.

Ok, it wasn't clear to me that you were considering MS65 Walkers at $200 in 1980. That seems reasonable. I didn't think $200 ea for regular BU's made any sense. There was a brief period from August 1979 to January 1980 when just about anything sold for strong money. Most everything with luster was called MS65 regardless if it was or wasn't.

Also keep in mind that some of those MS-65 walkers were fetching $200 in 1980 because they were really MS-67 and MS-68 in todays market.

I bought a MS-65 walker in 1980 for $210 that I got upgraded twice to MS-68. I finally let it go for $6500.

Keep in mind the 1980 year was an incredible year for cherrypicking.

Some dealer wrapped BU rolls from 1980 are finer in quality than the original wrapped rolls from the 1940's and 1950's!!

I agree that it must be a supply and demand issue. It is such a beautiful coin and extremely popular, but many of the later dates are available in most uncirculated grades.
Personally, I like the the 1916 Walker. It has a different look to it and is especially attractive in Unc grades. As a first year and relatively low mintage date, I wonder if it can be considered "undervalued." Perhaps in the MS63 and MS64 grades?

You may not have to wait that long, at least on the earlier dates. I just spent two days at Summer FUN, and saw mostly high prices on the pre '33's. Dealers I used be able to buy at or around Bid are now paying Ask+ for better dates in XF-Unc. But this is also going for many of the key and semi key coins in many of the popular date collected series.

    Walkerguy21D and 21Walker?

    Are you guys related? image

The 1921 Walker happens to be my favorite date.

I also pulled up a 1999 Collectors Universe price sheet and will do some comparisons to the current prices as that would be more telling than a two=three year price swing.

The long term changes in prices are more informative.

Not related that I know of, but now that I see the names and avatars side by side, it is like a pararell universe type of thing....BTW, I did find a nice raw '21P in commercial EF (VF35+) at the show that I picked up for $785. With Fines routinely selling for around $400 and AU's selling for around $2500, I thought this was a good price on a genuinely scarce coin.
PS - I'd really like to see your price comparison from 1999 when you're done. Are you going to compare various circ as well as MS grades?

Walkerguy21D - you got a screaming deal on the 21-P if it is an VF35. My experieince in buying mid VF 21's is that they do everything they can to get 75% of XF money on a 35. Numismedia puts a VF at $700 and an XF at $1500. I'm shocked that the dealer didn't want $1100 or more.

Thanks. The fellow working the table with him had said earlier in the day he was only discounting it to $850. I caught him right before he was leaving for dinner, he said $800, I countered with 750 and he said he paid more than that for it, so we settled on 785. It had been cleaned a LONG time ago, but otherwise is problem free with plenty of meat on it. Several dealer friends I showed it to said I stole at that price, and these are guys who would be quick to tell me otherwise. I also picked up a rock solid problem free '19S in XF40 for $450. But that was it for great walker deals after two full days, and roughly 200 dealers in attendance.
