Question about RED Kennedy Halves

Hello All,

I search rolls of Kennedys as a way to relax and have found some cool stuff throughout the years....

I have found scores and scores of Kennedys painted red over the years.....Most the red paint has worn off in different stages...none have ever looked like they were done yesterday.....

Have never seen a blue, green yellow, pink, purple ( I think you get the idea!) painted Half...just red....

As a side note...I have observed some red painted quarter too in my change in the past...

Is there some purpose to the red painted halves?

I've noticed blue, red, and black and I think it's done by other roll searchers to help them identify the coins they've sorted through and so that they can avoid searching the same coins twice.

Hi Tightbudget....I have seen halves marked...with a dot or slash of color.....most of the time with a sharpie...and those I know are "Roll Searcher" marked coins.....

However, these halves I have observed...and too many in the past years to just accept as chance....are completely painted red....obverse and reverse.....the aging of the paint...and the wear patterns of the paint show they had been painted a long time.

In the old days of the Juke Boxes, the owners of Gin Mills. Soda shops, etc. use to Paint coins to put in the machines when there just a few customers. When the machines were emptied, all the painted coins wera given
back to the owners. Bill Evans In my day the largest coin that a Juke box took was a Quarter.

What does that mean? I've also seen many red and blue halves, but I guess wasn't around the juke box scene back then...

Yes, In days of yore, an establishment would you red nail polish on coins that were meant for use in the juke box,
pool tables and such. That way they could give free games and tunes and such to patrons without losing track
of the true income the machines generated. Just a way to track the coins and keep separate from patron coins.
