Who is Jack Lee?

I was recently given a DMPL "Jack Lee" Morgan by a coin friend of mine. He kept making a big deal that it was a JL. Not to appear too ungratful or stupid or BOTH I could only say "Oh gee, wow, oh ah".

So who is he?

Also doesn't this reenforce the notion of "tagging" one's namesake on slabs is silly unless you are a Pittman or Eliasberg?image

  • He was from Mississippi, he owned bunches of loan companies. He also owned the finest Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar set ever assembled or very close. I doubt if Eliasberg or Pittman even came close to Jack Lee's unlimited resourses and eye for a top grade rare Morgan Dollar or Peace Dollar.

  • Jack is one of the finest gentleman you'll ever meet on the show circuit. A collector turned dealer, in his spare time, he has assembled two of the finest Morgan Dollar sets in the world. In fact, at the recent FUN Show he decided to sell the Jack Lee 2 set of Morgan and Peace Dollars, with most common dates grading MS68-69 PCGS and semi key date MS66-67 and even key dates grading MS66 or finer.

He had two 1893-S MS67 PCGS for sale, that pretty much tells the picture right there.

Jack Lee is probably as close as you can get to a Pittman or Eliasberg without being a Pittman or Eliasberg! One of the greatest specialty collectors of all time: MS Morgans, Proof Morgans, DMPL Morgans, Walking Liberty halves, Peace Dollars. All fantastic collections.
  • Oh my!

I think I better return it. What the heck was he thinking!! It looks nice but I am more of a type and classics guy. Morgans dont do anything for me.

    Thanks guys!

Edited to add: I probably never heard of him because he is still alive!! image
  • The Jack Lee Pedigree IS THE HIGHEST PEDIGREE for Peace and Morgan dollars. These Jack Lee Pedigrees Peace and Morgans contain some of the very best examples known to exsist. Not only in grade but, eye appeal and luster as well! Some are so good, they should be in a museum. You have a very generous friend. They are that highly regarded with people who collect these coins. Your one lucky guy and if I where you, I would be heisitaint to give it up. They are usually very expensive and not many are willing to sell if they have one. If you can or willing How about giving us Morgan and Peace dollar fans a look.image

Edit to add that if you want to give it back to your freind that`s cool of you. Sounds like the two of you are good friends.image So at least you can say you owned a Jack Lee for awhile.image
  • Here's one for sale on eBay from the Jack Lee Collection
  • I can say I have had the chance to hold 3 or 4 of his proof 69 NGC graded Morgans and they are stunning (I am sure Laura can vouch for this).

I can't add much to what's been said already but he is one of the nicest people you'll meet! He'll take the time to talk "dollars" to anyone who will stop and listen! He and his wife (a wonderful person!) will usually be set up with US Coin out of Houston, Texas.

As far as I'm aware, he still lives in Mississippi and still owns a number of 'loan' companies.

To show you what kind of guy he is, a coin buddy of mine who lives in Vicksburg convinced Jack Lee to take a table at their one day show back in August. There was Jack with some of the finest Morgan and Peace dollars in the country set up at a show with 29 tables!!!!!! Amazing.

We disowned him YEARS ago when he stole of some of my Morgans. If you run across any, please return them. Thanks.

Well I guess you can't now say that you don't know Jack.

he lives right down the road from me. mega gazillionaire. TOWER LOAN is his company. my dad and he were very good friends in the 60's and i personally helped him acquire many coins in the 80's and 90's before he got out to the show circuit much. i had the ultimate honor and priviledge of being able to view all of his collection at any time. i'd call him to chew fat. he would sit down have one of his girls go to the vault at his main local loan office near the house he went to with a vault and security system equal to that of any large bank and we would gawk at those branch mint proofs and super duper mega dollars. hated to see him move on from that collection but he still has one coin that will break all records of records. 93-s 67 possible most probable 8 moderate to heavy CAMEO deeeeeeeeeep mirror pl...RAW

Friends are Gods way of apologizing for your relatives.
  • Truely the man has assembled the finest 2 sets of Morgan dollars ever. The feat will probably not be done again. However, this does show you what large wads of cash, passion, and desire, can do for your collecting habits image
    Got Morgan?
  • OK Guys, the joke is on gullible and vulnerable me! I got this "Jack Lee" slab and it did not look all the great, But I don't do Morgans so what do I know? Anyway. My good buddy fiddled with a PCGS slab and it is a phoney. Upon closer inspection I recognized the PCGS lettering is all wrong and I see glue inside the top of he slab. When I found out how much the coin was worth I returned it to my friend as I cannot accept such a gift. He and several others laughed hysterically. Duh! When I learned of the prank my mind started thinking...revenge! When he least expects it. Funny thing is he thought I would be more "wild " about the coin, but since I did not know "jack" about Jack, the prank did not work as well as he thought it would. All in all some harmless fun between some old timers!

I got to see much of Jack Lee's Walking Liberty Half Dollar collection slabbed by PCGS in 1997.

While he had some incredible coins in that collection, some of them were given a benefit of a doubt by PCGS between the MS-67 and MS-68 grades because the strike was so spectacular.

I fell in love with his 1921-P PCGS MS-66 walker and had to have it. Sure, I paid full price for it but that was going to be my early walker type coin for eternity. I still have it, safe and sound. It can never be a MS-67 because of a bag mark across the leg but it has the most spectacular blend of luster and brilliance for an early walker.

I also have a 1940-P walker in PCGS MS-68 and a 1942-S in PCGS MS-66 (should be a MS-67 someday) but hands down, Jack's 1921 walker is a killer compared to either of the other walkers.

Jack Lee knew walkers better than anyone else. Gosh was he good at what he did.

Looks like this thread needs to take on a more "coppery" view of the new Jack Lee.

Wow, this thread is back. It is disturbing reading so much of him in the past tense though, like obituaries. Jack is still around and with us. Last I talked with him he was a strong buyer of the finest Lincoln cents. It was fun watching him at Platinum Night a couple FUN shows back. Other bidders backed down to Jack knowing that if he wanted a coin lot he was going to get it. Of course if it's a pop 2/0 coin and you have the other one, better to bid him up to the moon.

He put together the finest morgan dollar set ever assembled. That pedigree is one that adds to a coin.

<< <i>. . . has been added to the current Registry sets. It's worth a look just to gawk at the low pops.

I'm glad to see that he has given up those large gaudy silver discs to finally pursue the more refined collecting pursuit of Lincoln copper.image

It's quite an impressive set. It's actually 100% complete, but some of his ert. numbers still have not been removed from other sets or are in other folks inventories. This should be resolved in about a week. I'm pleased to say that I brokered the sale of his MS-65 RD 1926-S. I believe he'll be #2 just behind Stew Blay in the 1909-1958 basic set.

    Ira >>

The above was reply by Ira Stein to a thread started in the registry set board by DMWJR. It appears that Jack Lee's newest passion is Lincoln Cents 1909 to 1958. The thread is:

The Jack Lee Lincoln Cent Set

Many "Who don't know Jack" seem to think he will be unable to catch the number one set. My guess is that he is less than 0.10 points away at most if Ira is correct and he has the rest of these coins in similar condition.

As a lincoln set collector I think it is outstanding to see competition at the top and will enjoy watching the rise of Jack Lee's set.image

Jack Lee, along with a couple of other notable personalities are the giants of the silver dollar segment of numismatics. An aggressive yet gentle Southern gentleman, he probably knows more about silver dollars than most people will ever dream of knowing.

Slabs with his pedigree are generally worth a premium over other pedigreed Morgans of the corresponding date and variety.
