ccmorganccmorgan Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭
My old(only 1-1/2yrs old)crapped out. Batteries wount hold a charge and I can't view pics on my computer anymore?

What do you guys recomend? 1st off I want one that take AA batteries. 7-8 MP should be enough datail for cropping ect. Don't want to spend a bundle $250 or less cause it's just a hobby for me.

Thinking about this one. Canon A630

I use the Cannon Powershot Pro1, a great great point and shoot camera...

Captures stunning detail that rivals much more exspensive pro Cameras...

    Awesome closeup! image

Edited to add I use a Fujifilm S5000 FinePix SLR. It was about $500 4 years ago. Just make sure that you get decent macro functionality when you finally buy one. Without macro you can't take coin pix.

Some how Lucy I think there's more talent envolved with your pics than just point and shoot. How close can you take pics?

Camera is in 'Macro Mode' and the lens was very very close to the coin on that one, as close as I could be and still alow some light in so the image is visable...

I don't think I have talent, as when it comes to Cameras and settings, I am rather clueless, many on these boards have photography talent..

I just am able to get a decent image with a surprisingly powerful point and shoot Camera...

This canon I have my eye on is 8MP with a 1cm macro focus range for $200.

Lucy, You mean to tell me you don't crop and edit your coin pics?

Yes I crop and resize them down, as they always come out poster sized!

I have one flood lamp, sometimes I angle it sideways, on the side that is darkest on the coin, other then that I use overhead normal room lights.. Because my lighting is limited, I get better results during the day, as the room I shoot in is rather bright when its sunny out...

I looked all over for a new Powershot Pro 1 and couldn't find it. I ended up getting a Powershot S5 IS. 8 Megapixels but won't do RAW format like the Pro1.

The Camera you got is very sweet and can get the job done..

I never shoot in RAW format, as I never installed Cannons software on my computer, I only shoot in JPEG.....

I don't think it has the lens quality of the powershot pro or the new Cannon G7, it still may take a wonderful image...

I think the Powershot Pro1, the G7 and the new S5 IS have a lens that is as close as it gets to being like the Digital Rebel SLR camera..

Since that is probably the case, these Cameras are going to be pricey...

  • So far I'm happy with the S5, easy to make changes while shooting, and the big LCD screen swivels to any angle making it easy to see what your're getting. The super macro will focus at nearly 0". It will also tether to the computer, but I haven't tried that yet. The camera was $500

Added: This makes a great camera for vacations too. It will zoom the equivalent of 35mm camera from 28mm-432mm, has anti shake, shoots videos and you can shoot single pics while shooting a video.

Should do nicely. Many a great coin picture have been and still are being produced with technically less capable equipment.
  • How do you get pictures reduced to the size needed to post on these boards? I have a Mac and it seems difficult.
  • I use adobe photoshop elements but I'm not sure if they make a Mac compatible version. I would google "photo editing mac" and see if it brings up any free ware too. With the Mac being so good with graphics, I'm sure there are a lot of photo editing programs available. The one thing I do when I resize is uncheck the box that says "resample", this way all the pixels are used in the smaller image, giving great resolution.

I use photobucket. It automatically resizes them to 1 meg max. Perfect for forums.

Sweet pic Swamp!!! Think I'll try the $200 canon A630. It's just a hobby and I can't justify spending $600 for a camera to take coin pics when the % of pics I take will be 2% coin and 98% other/long distance pics family ect. I'll use the other $400 to buy some morgans!!!
