PCGS First Strikes ?

ccmorganccmorgan Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭
I keep seeing the rumor that PCGS is going to halt the "First Strike" designation. But I can't seem to find any reliable info?

Is this true? If so when will they stop? Also when did they start? Some say 2005........

Just curious. Thanks

Curious....how would you tell if it was the first strike that did it or the 2nd?

Just glad that no coins were damaged during this mishap.

I would have to say it was the first blow that did it?

  • It's NCG that did away with the first strike.

    Special Designations
NGC offers several designations for coins with a documented date of release, most notably EARLY RELEASES and FIRST STRIKES (the latter has been discontinued). Detailed definitions for these designations are available:

Edited to remove truthful statements that PCGS may find offensive.

    ...tread lightly folks...
  • I have a few of the First Strike holders that I bought from others, but I'm not paying an extra $10 for things I submit. I don't think it will have any value in the long run.

I think it's more of a collector slab and not the coin itself. If you order early and lets say the mint has 100K on hand they are some of the first sruck coins but not neccessarily the first struck off a new die. The proofs all are but not the UNCs. Though they do carry a premium and if PCGS keeps getting requests for them I think they will keep slabbing as such.
I think it's a nice looking holder IMO. Something better than the "Plain Jane" looking holder.
