Dollar Coin Question & Poll....

Okay all you Morganites, don't go hating on me for my ignorance.... but I finally had to ask:

Why is the Morgan Dollar so popular????

(I personally am surprised that it has achieved such "collectible" status... and would think that the Peace Dollar would be more sought after for it's aesthetic appeal?)

I'm wrong, and am hoping that someone can point out why?

Why is the Morgan Dollar so popular????

For me it is all about design, The Morgan makes a statment from a specific time period . While called a widget by many, it still captivates me such as many other examples do. image The history behind the CC mint is most interesting, much politics and "Tom follery" going on. Much like the political atsmosphere of today, history repeats itself century after century. Go Figure. image

i think the peace is one of the ugliest and the morgan easily
    tops it.

but i choose seated liberty because i think it is a classic.
trade dollars were a distant second.

I would have voted for Bust Dollars, but they were not an option.

    Of choices given - Seated

Interesting to see what trips or does not trip a collectors interest design wise. image

    Edited to add;
Screw classic, image I love the design

I won't vote. Heraldic draped bust for the win.

Is the "Bust" Dollar the "Liberty Head" Gold Dollar?
If so, sorry to have left it out.... but I think Gold (no matter the design) would be inherently more aesthetically appealing... and therefore skew my poll! image

  • I kind of grew fond of the Susie, but the best looking dollar would have been Gasparro's Flowing Hair Liberty which should have been minted instead of the Susie.

No, but really - if you don't collect morgans... why would you even care?

Perhaps we should all collect the same mutally agreed upon coin - like a 1999 roosevelt dime. That way, nobody could thumb their noses at anybody else.

  • Okay.... I missed the earlier ones - they are now available!!

Well, I didn't used to collect lots of things that I do now. I was just curious (due to the Morgan's popularity) to find out what reasons, other than "I like the way it looks", that they are so high on the collectors list? Thought maybe I was 'missing' something in it all.... or something.

I wish more collectors would collect these!

One reason the Morgan dollar is so popular is that it is so plentiful, even in high grade, which allows it to be mass marketed, makes it affordable for many folks and allows high grade specimens to be obtained rather easily.

Another collectable aspect of the Morgan dollar is that it can be broken down into different collector groups. With groupings available for any numismatic budget, you can be sure to have some following.

  • Liberty gold $1 has been omitted too.

However, my favorite design by far is the flowing hair. It is hands down the all time classic design for US coinage.
The US mint did a really lame spighetti haired "gold dollar" pattern recently that didn't even do the coin justice.
  • image This would be a little known corollary to the law of supply and demand. "Supply creates demand".
As of November 1962, the Treasury still had over 100 million silver dollars backing silver certificates. Most of these were Morgans and going into circulation fast. You could find an occasional circulated CC or a 1893S or a Seated Liberty. Actually the bank employess kept that one. The coin papers in those days were full of of big ads from folks like Shotgon Slade and Peachtree offering silver dollars. Today seems tame in comparsion. And all of this was before the Treasury department sold the uncirculated Carson City coins which stirred up more interest.

I see "Draped Bust" in the options given -- was that not there when you saw this? There's no indication the original post has been edited...

Post #13: I indicated that I had "updated" the poll to include some overlooked early coinage. I am pretty sure I have now included every US Dollar coin (excluding GOLD).

  • I don't collect Morgans but I think they are much more attractive than the usually baggy Peace dollars.

Interesting. So you can edit a poll and the original post doesn't appear as edited.
